The bottom of the pit was littered with dry branches and dead leaves; Sloane hit the ground hard, pain shooting
through her entire body, but she didn’t dare make a sound. Curling up quickly, she held her breath and listened
intently to the noise outside.
“Holy crop, where the heck did that wench go?” one of the assassins growled from the edge of the pit.
“Cut the crap, split up and search! She couldn't have gotten far!” a gruff voice snapped, thick with impatience.
Sloane's heart pounded so hard it felt like it might burst from her chest. She clutched the hairpin in her hand,
ready to fight to the death if she had to.
But the men in black never noticed the deep pit. Their footsteps gradually faded into the distance.
Sloane let out a slow breath, though she knew she couldn't stay here for long. Grabbing onto a vine, she climbed
out quickly and darted deeper into the woods, using the trees for cover.
She hadn’t gotten far when a low humming noise suddenly buzzed overhead. Glancing up, she saw several
drones circling in the sky; red scanning beams swept through the forest in wide, methodical arcs.

They're using high-tech surveillance. There's nowhere to hide. Her heart sank.
She ducked behind a large tree, held her breath, and tried to stay out of the scanner’s range. But the drone’s
infrared detection system had already locked onto her location.
“There she is!” someone shouted in the distance. Footsteps thundered toward her, fast and relentless.
Sloane clenched her jaw and tightened her grip on the hairpin. She was surrounded; the only way out was to
fight her way through.

“You little wench, cout! You're not getting away,” the gruff voice echoed through the forest again.
Sloane didn’t respond. Instead, she quickly scanned her surroundings, mind racing through the terrain’s layout.
She knew this forest like the back of her hand. If her memory was right, there was a steep slope just ahead;
beneath it lay a thick grove. Maybe, she could use the terrain to throw them off.
She sprang from behind the tree and sprinted toward the slope. The assassins behind her gave chase
immediately; their footsteps and shouting echoed violently through the trees.
“Get her! Don’t let her escape!” the gruff voice roared.
Sloane moved like a fox-fast, elusive, weaving through the woods—but there were too many of them. Two
assassins soon flanked her from the side, attempting to cut her off.
Holding her breath, she pressed herself tightly against a thick tree trunk. The knife in her hand glinted with a
cold, deadly light. Her eyes sharpened as she waited silently for her prey to ccloser.
The footsteps drew near. One assassin crept forward, searching cautiously. Sloane tilted her head slightly and
caught sight of him through a crack in the bark. Her heartbeat remained steady; fingers wrapped tight around
the handle of her blade, she waited for the perfect moment.
The instant he stepped past the trunk, Sloane shot out like a ghost; her knife plunged cleanly into the back of his
neck. He didn’t even have tto grunt before he collapsed in a limp heap.
She dragged his body into a nearby bush-quick, clean, silent.
The second assassin soon entered her line of sight. He must've realized his partner was missing; eyes narrowed,
gun raised, he scanned the forest with sharp, twitching movements.
Suddenly, a vibrantly colored snake dropped from a tree and sank its fangs into his
neck.

“Aagh!” he cried out, but he didn’t even get a chance to pull the trigger before crashing to the ground.
The other assassins, hearing his cry, swarmed toward the noise.
But Sloane was already hiding behind a large tree in the opposite direction.
By the tthey reached the scene, all they found were the corpses of their two
teammates.
The leader of the group flew into a rage and kicked one of the bodies viciously. “Damn it, we've been played!”
