Chapter 178

Hailey’s eyes were still red as she curled up under the blanket, looking utterly fragile.

100%

Noticing Owen staring at her, she hastily wiped away her tears and lowered her gaze. “Why are you back again?”

she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Owen shut the door and walked toward her, settling beside her on the hospital bed. His rough fingertips traced

gently along her soft, porcelain skin as he murmured in a deep, cool voice, “You missso much, yet you insist

on pretending otherwise.”

Hailey pressed her lips together, avoiding his gaze.

Owen caught her chin, forcing her to look at him. His cold, piercing eyes locked onto hers as he asked, “Hailey,

I'll ask you one last time—are you really sure you want to leave me?”

She was trapped in his gaze, unable to utter a single word.

The air between them grew cerily still.

Hailey knew that as long as she hesitated, as long as she didn’t say she was sure, Owen would never walk away-

no matter what they had to face.

But that wasn’t what she wanted.

He had been born into a life of privilege, living in luxury, standing above the masses. Yet if the world discovered

his love for her-his cousin-his life would be shattered beyond repair.

He would be condemned, his ndragged through the mud, and the empire he built would crumble under the

weight of scandal. Hailey understood how brutal public opinion could be.

Taking a deep breath, she looked at him, eyes red-rimmed but steady. “Owen, you're destined for a brilliant

future,” she said softly.

But deep in her heart, she thought, ‘Even if that future doesn’t include me, | will always love you, always support

you. I'll bury my love for you deep in my heart, where no one will ever find it.’

Owen held her gaze for a long moment before sighing, his lashes lowering.

“Hailey,” he said, his voice quiet but unwavering. “You really letdown.”

No words could have cut deeper. Hailey felt herself shatter.

She sat there, stunned, as he rose to his feet. His tall, lean frdrifted away, his figure fading before her eyes-

just like he was fading from her life.

By the tRaphael arrived, Hailey had already signed her discharge papers.

She stood at the hospital entrance, pale and dazed.

Raphael hurried over, draping his coat over her shoulders with a slight frown. “Your fever hasn't even broken yet.

Why did you leave?”

Hailey lifted her head and smiled faintly. “I'm fine now. | just don’t like hospitals. I'd rather rest at home.”

He studied her face. “Something happened, didn’t it? You look awful.”

Hailey shook her head, forcing a smile. “What could possibly have happened? It’s just a breakup, that’s all.”

Raphael knew Finley had returned to Wothaland. He also knew Hailey had never fully cut ties with Owen.

He just hadn't expected her to make a decision so soon.

Without pressing further, he changed the subject. “I'll drive you home.”

“Thank you” Hailey leaned against the car window, closing her eyes as the city lights flickered past.

Evening descended, bringing a sharp chill. The rain had fallen earlier, leaving Hallon City cold and damp.

She couldn't stop shivering. Her lips were colorless, her face ghostly pale.

Instead of taking her to the Dalton estate, Raphael drove her to the apartment she had bought in Rosewood.

“Thank you for the trouble,” she murmured as she stepped out of the car.

Raphael hesitated before saying, “I'll walk you up. Your fever hasn't broken yet-1 don’t feel comfortable leaving

you alone.”

Hailey considered for a moment, then nodded.

The elevator ride was silent.

When she entered the apartment, the place felt colder than she remembered. It had been a while since she

stayed here. She changed her shoes and brought Raphael a pair of slippers.

“Do you want something to eat?” he asked.

Hailey shook her head and collapsed onto the couch, utterly drained.

Between crying during the IV treatment and the lingering fever, she could barely lift a finger.

“I'll make you soatmeal,” Raphael said as he headed to the kitchen. “If you get hungry, just heat it up. |

have to work late, so if you want anything else, call me, and I'll bring it over.”

Hailey mumbled a response, then dragged herself to the bedroom, changed into pajamas, and collapsed onto

the bed.

Sleep cinstantly..

By the tshe woke up, it was ten at night.

The apartment was dark and silent. Wrapped too tightly in blankets, she had sweated through her fever and felt

slightly better.

She turned on the lights and got out of bed.

On the nightstand was a note from Raphael. He had left her oatmeal in the kitchen and told her to call him when

she woke

up.

Hailey tossed the note into the trash, took a quick shower, and then sent Raphael a brief message.

The oatmeal was thick and sweet, comforting in its warmth.

But after finishing a bowl, she found herself sinking into the couch, lost in thought.

Now that she had nothing to do, her mind kept drifting back to Owen. ‘Is he thinking abouttoo?‘

Unable to resist, she grabbed her phone and opened WhatsApp, scrolling through their past messages.

But whether it was when they were together or after they reconciled, their chat history was shockingly sparse.

Most of the time, they had simply called each other or met in person.

Hailey scrolled for a while, then shut her phone.

She realized, for the first time, just how little they had left between them. Not even a single photo.

She curled up on the couch, staring into space, feeling as if she had lost a vital part of herself-like a machine

missing its core function.

Finley's business in Wothaland wasn’t finished yet, so his flight back to Northsilver was scheduled for a week

later.

And for that entire week, Hailey didn’t see Owen.

Not until the night before she was set to leave. Scarlett had invited her to dinner.

“So, you're really leaving?” Scarlett asked, dressed impeccably as always-wide-leg trousers, high heels, every

inch of her tall frexuding elegance.

Hailey simply nodded, keeping her head down as she ate.

Scarlett propped her chin on her hand and sighed. “Look at you. You've completely fallen apart.” She reached

out and pinched Hailey’s face lightly. “You've lost so much weight.”

Hailey smiled, her almond eyes clear and obedient. “I'm fine. I'll get over it sooner or later. Isn't there a saying?

Theals everything. | was never the kind of person to live or die for love. Scarlett, I'm not that fragile.”

Scarlett fell silent. She had said everything she could, and now, there was nothing left to say.

Hailey had always been like this-swallowing her pain, bottling everything inside. No matter how much it hurt, she

never spoke of it.

Scarlett sighed. “Fine. But if you ever need to drink your sorrows away, call me. | may not be good at much, but |

can at least drink with you.”

Hailey chuckled. “I'm leaving tomorrow, Scarlett. You won't be here even if | wanted to call you.”

“You can video call me,” Scarlett said, waving her phone.

Hailey raised a brow. “Alright. I'll remember that.”
