Chapter 177

Despite the heavy rain, neither of them canceled their plans to meet.

At exactly 4 p.m., Hailey and Owen arrived at the restaurant they had booked.

Hailey waited for two minutes before Owen arrived. Perhaps he got caught in the rain when he got out of the car,

as his suit jacket was damp.

Hailey grabbed a tissue and wiped the water off his jacket before removing it and setting it aside. “How come

you didn’t bring an umbrella?”

Owen sat down beside her and smiled. “I forgot.”

The waiter cin, and they both ordered their meals before he left.

Today, Owen was unusually quiet, almost as if he sensed something was off.

Hailey didn’t want to sit in silence the whole time, so she decided to break the ice by chatting about the events

of the day, rambling on about trivial matters.

There wasn’t much to say, just small talk, but as she spoke, Owen felt a sense of peace wash over him. Her voice

was comforting, the perfect antidote to the silent tension.

The food arrived quickly. Since it was just the two of them, they didn’t order much-just enough not to waste.

Hailey was starving, having barely eaten anything for lunch, so she dug in immediately.

Owen focused on serving her, picking up food for her without saying much.

By the tthey were nearly done, Hailey lazily set down her fork and leaned back, gazing at Owen’s handsome

profile.

“Owen,” she said, propping her head on her hand.

He hummed softly and reached up to touch her hair, his smile gentle. “What's up?”

Hailey squinted at him, a heavy sigh escaping her as she threw herself into his arms.

Owen lightly patted her back. “If you want to say something, just say it.”

Hailey stayed quiet for a moment, then softly said, “My father cback to Wothaland. He talked toabout

something today.”

“Did he ask you to break up with me?” Owen asked gently.

Hailey looked up at him, nodding slightly. “How did you know?”

Owen rubbed her head fondly. “I'm not stupid.”

Hailey let out a soft laugh, but it faded just as quickly.

“My father wantsto go back with him,” she continued, sitting up. Her eyes were slightly red as she spoke in a

quiet tone, “He also said Parker would eventually recognize you. Owen, this time... we really can’t be together.”

She sat close to him, but Owen felt a painful distance between them, as if they were separated by an

insurmountable barrier

Owen's gaze darkened as he looked at her. “Hailey, if you give up on me, | won't stay faithful to you.”

Owen sighed softly, speaking the painful truth. “I'll be with someone else. I'll get married and start a family. If

you think you can bear it, then we can part ways.

Hailey’s eyes instantly welled up with tears.

She lowered her head, instinctively clenching her fists before slowly relaxing them. Taking a deep breath, she

fought to hold back the overwhelming emotions threatening to consher.

She couldn't bear it, but she was powerless to change it.

As Finley had said, if she were to be with Owen, they would face not just public scrutiny, but the suffering of

countless innocent victims who would be dragged into their love story.

Hailey wasn’t that selfish. She couldn't let so many people sacrifice for their love.

Breaking up was the best choice.

She took a deep breath and said softly, “Let's eat.”

Owen looked at her side profile, a low, cold laugh escaping him. He said nothing.

This meal turned out to be a quiet goodbye.

Owen didn’t touch his food at all.

Hailey couldn't eat anymore either. They sat in the private room for a long time, the oppressive silence

suffocating them.

Hailey stood up and said, “It’s getting late. Let's go.”

Owen raised his head, glancing at her. “Hailey, are you really sure about this decision?”

Hailey paused for a moment, her body stiffening. She turned to look at his face.

“Owen, this is better for both of us,” she said, her voice hoarse.

Owen gave a low, bitter laugh. Hailey lowered her eyes, unable to meet his gaze.

Owen said nothing else. He grabbed his coat and stood up. “Con. I'll take you home.”

Hailey walked out silently.

Owen followed her, walking not too far behind, both of them wrapped in a thick silence.

When they reached the car, Owen opened the door for her, and Hailey got in.

Sitting in the passenger seat, Hailey couldn't help but think that soon, he would be opening the car door for

another woman, and his passenger seat would be given to someone else.

The thought made her heart ache, but at least she could bear it as long as she never had to see it.

Compared to being with him forever, Hailey preferred that Owen find true happiness.

If they stayed together, it would only bring them pain.

She wanted him to have a normal, happy life, just like anyone else.

For that, she was willing to endure anything.

Leaning against the passenger seat, Hailey turned her head to look out the window, slowly closing her eyes.

She didn’t know when she fell asleep.

When she woke up, she found herself in the hospital, connected to an IV.

The past few days of running back and forth to the hospital had drained her.

She used to never be so fragile.

Owen was sitting next to her bed, his expression neutral. Their eyes met.

“You're running a fever,” Owen said, his voice calm.

Hailey raised her hand and touched her forehead, unable to help but let out a dry laugh. “I didn’t even feel it.”

Maybe it was because she had been so immersed in the pain of separation, she hadn't even noticed her fever.

Owen didn’t respond. He simply adjusted her blanket, tucking it around her more comfortably.

Owen asked, “How do you feel now?”

Hailey pressed her lips together and said, “Thirsty.”

Owen stood up and poured her swater before walking to the end of the bed and adjusting it, handing her

the glass.

Hailey drank half the glass, and Owen took it back, placing it aside.

“Get smore sleep,” he said, standing up as if preparing to leave.

“Where are you going?” Hailey asked, unable to help herself.

Owen tilted his head and looked at her quietly, saying nothing.

Hailey sighed, slowly exhaling. “It’s fine. If you have something to do, go ahead.”

Owen didn’t say anything, staring at her for a few seconds before leaving the room, his expression unreadable.

The door slammed shut behind him.

Hailey’s headache returned as she stared at the ceiling, lost in thought.

The words Owen had said earlier echoed in her mind: he wouldn't stay faithful to her, and one day, he would be

with another woman.

Someone as ruthless and cold as him would never return to her once he found someone else.

Her throat tightened, and her heart seemed to be squeezed in an iron grip, filled with despair and pain.

This was it. It was truly over.

Even though the pain was unbearable, it was the only choice.

Before she realized it, tears started streaming down her face.

Suddenly, the door to her room opened, and Owen stood there, his face expressionless.
