Chapter 26 Just a Tool
When Charlotte heard what Arthur had said, she was furious.
She'd only thrown a couple of insults his way, and now he threatened to cut off her livelihood.
She thought bitterly, “Seriously? What about the five years | wasted on him?
What about all the awful things he did to me?
How am | supposed to make up for that?”
The more she dwelled on it, the more infuriated she became, though an undeniable sense of despair lay beneath
her anger. How had her life becsuch

a tragedy?
As Charlotte, she couldn't even secure a clean break from him. As Ms. Aroma, she had only succeeded in
incurring his wrath further.
By the tCharlotte returned to the Hardwick Villa, exhaustion had replaced her initial fury. Removing her
mask, she swallowed a pill that restored her natural voice.
With a quiet word of thanks to the driver, she exited the car and made her way inside.
The villa was brightly lit, the interior gleaming with an air of affluence that felt strangely hollow.
Upon entering the living room, Charlotte
immediately noticed Camille seated on the sofa. Camille’s immaculately preserved features carried a cold, steely

Charlotte walked to a nearby armchair and sat down without a preamble. “What

“Have you completely lost your mind, Charlotte? You were the one who insisted on marrying him in the first
place. You even resorted to humiliating yourself with that bed-climbing stunt to make it happen. And now, after
just five years, you want a divorce? Are you insane?” Camille shouted.
After learning that Charlotte wanted a divorce, Camille couldn't believe it and suppressed her anger.

“I had a car accident,” Charlotte replied calmly. “I lost my memory, including everything about Arthur and Julius.
Over the past few months, I've been reevaluating my life, and I've cto realize I'm not happy. If that’s the
case, why should | stay in this marriage? What crhave | committed by wanting a divorce?”
Camille's eyes narrowed with suspicion. “You're pretending, aren't you?”
The question struck a nerve, but Charlotte’s face betrayed nothing. “I don’t know what you mean,” she replied,
furrowing her brows slightly.
A cold laugh escaped Camille's lips. “Don’t try to fool me. I'm your mother; | know you better than anyone. This

yours? It's an act, isn't it? You're
deliberately creating trouble for Arthur, aren't you?”
Charlotte felt a chill spread through her chest. She hadn’t expected her mother to see through her so easily, but
she knew she couldn’t admit the truth.
“I'm not pretending,” she said firmly. “I’ve genuinely forgotten everything. Besides, why would | go to such
lengths to fake it?”
“Because you're unhappy,” Camille said without hesitation. “You want to make him suffer, to force him to treat
you better.”
For a moment, Charlotte felt suffocated.
So her mother knew she was miserable.
Yet, in all these years, no one from her family had reached out to ask about her

well-being, not even after learning about
her accident.
Camille's next words were delivered with ruthless indifference. “Do whatever you want to make him
uncomfortable, but divorce is out of the question. You may not care about your reputation, but | do. Do you have
any idea how difficult it was to bury the scandal from five years ago? | will not allow it to resurface.”
Charlotte clenched her fists tightly, her voice low but resolute. “So, even if Arthur has a mistress, | still can’t
divorce him?”
Camille’s expression remained unmoved, “And why should that matter? Your father

has had countless mistresses. Has that

Camille's callousness left Charlotte speechless.

Camille continued, her tone unwavering, “You already have a son with Arthur. Your position is unshakable. Stop
entertaining foolish ideas. You will not divorce him. Do you understand?”
Charlotte rose abruptly, her body trembling with barely contained emotion. Without another word, she turned
and headed upstairs.
“Charlotte, I'm talking to you! Did you hear me?” Camille's voice rang out sharply behind her.
But Charlotte couldn't bring herself to respond. Her emotions were stretched to their breaking point, and she
feared that saying even a single word might lead to an

irreparable collapse.

Her determination to divorce Arthur was no longer just about him. Now, she had to contend with her own
family’s opposition.
Once in the solitude of her room, Charlotte sat on the edge of her bed, staring blankly at the wall. Tears welled
up in her eyes, spilling over before she could stop them.
Just then, her phone buzzed twice. She glanced at the screen, and her breath caught in her throat.
