Ethan leaned next to me. | was too tired to shuffle away from him. His body heat didn’t warmup even half as
much as Alexander's. | shook my head to clear it. | needed to take a break from men.
A car horn beeped in the distance, and two kids rode bicycles past us. The world kept moving on around us, but
it seemed like my ex-husband and | had traveled back to the past. This neighborhood was where we spent most

“Listen, I'm sorry about this morning at the diner,” Ethan said in a gentle voice. “I was out of line, and | didn’t
mean anything | said.” He paused and let out a long, slow breath.
When I didn’t say anything, Ethan continued. “I only said those terrible things to you because I'm jealous,” he
admitted. Out of the corner of my eye, | noticed that his foot was tapping an erratic rhythm. “Even though | was
the one who stepped out on our marriage, | just can't stand the thought of you with another man.” He stuffed his
hands in the pockets of his black slacks. “I know how much of a double standard that is-
| snorted, which made Ethan turn toward me, trying to catch my eye.
“Really, | do,” he said, his lips trembling a little with suppressed emotion. “But I just want you to know that |
understand where you're coming from, and | want you to know that | promise that I'll never force myself on you
again. | can see how wrong that is now.” His eyes widened with sincerity.
| snorted again, but Ethan ignoredthis time.
“If you walk around witharound our old school, just for an hour, | promise that | will never bother you again,”
Ethan said.
