Chapter 234 Making Him So Worried
Melba stood silently, conflicted for several moments before finally choosing to speak.
Her voice cracked slightly as she admitted quietly, “It’s aplastic anemia.”
Aplastic anemia!
Stunned silence gripped Eric instantly.
He had prepared himself for difficult news, yet the reality of Joy's illness struck him deeper than expected.
As he held Joy gently against him, Eric struggled to control his breathing.
She was still a child-how could she face something so severe?
Instinctively, Eric looked down at the girl in his embrace, fearing even the slightest pressure could harm her.
Brows deeply knitted, Eric asked Melba urgently, “What's the reason for today’s visit?”
Melba dabbed her moist eyes, exhaling slowly. “We ctoday to get her admitted for her regular examinations.
She's spent all morning enduring one test after another-it's exhausting for her tiny body.”
That explained why Joy appeared so weak, Eric realized with concern.
He gently shifted Joy's weight in his arms and softly asked, “Joy, can you tellwhat's hurting you right now?”
Thinking carefully, Joy finally shook her head. “Joy doesn’t know.”
She bit her lip, tears spilling quietly down her cheeks. “But | feel really, really sick inside.”
“Shh, it's okay.” Eric immediately stopped questioning. “I know, sweetheart. I'm right here with you; don’t cry.”
“Okay!”
Joy sniffled, pressing her tiny face closer into Eric's chest.
Unsettled by her frail condition, Eric glanced worriedly toward Melba. “Where's her room?”
“Please cwith me.”
Once they reached the room, Eric’s tension only increased. “Get a doctor in here quickly!”
With Joy clearly distressed, Eric knew he wouldn't relax until a medical professional had checked on her.
“I'll get someone right now.”
She left the room hurriedly.

Colden had been busy all morning himself but immediately rushed in when informed about Joy's condition.
Patting Joy's head softly, he praised her. “You were very brave today, weren't you?”
He then reached into his pocket and handed her the promised candy. “This is for you-like | said.”

“Thank you,” Joy murmured weakly, accepting the candy without enthusiasm this time.
Tension lingered visibly on Eric's face as he addressed Colden. “Are you certain Joy's okay?”
“Yes, she’s fine.”
Colden nodded reassuringly, giving Eric a curious once-over. What was this man’s relationship with Joy?
Clearly, he wasn’t just anyone ordinary-his authoritative presence alone proved that.
To ease Eric's obvious worry, Colden explained gently, “These tests can be tough on children, and Joy's reaction
is normal. She'll recover soon enough.”
“Understood.”
Eric nodded, understanding, though his expression remained troubled.
Eric gently adjusted Joy in his arms, attempting to lay her down on her bed for her to rest properly.
“Hold me!” Joy's voice trembled softly. “You don’t likeanymore?”
Feeling somewhat uncomfortable, Melba suggested carefully, “Your arms must be getting tired for holding her so
long. Maybe | should take her instead? Kids tend to cling when they're sick-it’s normal.”
Was that how children acted?
Eric had no idea and simply assumed Joy would be feeling better lying down. Now that he knew, he couldn't
bring himself to release the fragile girl in his arms.
“No, I've got her.”
Shaking his head, Eric kept her in his arms, gently soothing her.
“Joy, I'm sorry. How could | ever not like you? | just thought you might want to lie down.”
As he whispered comforting words, Eric slowly paced around the quiet ward.
“You're my favorite little girl.”
Glancing uncertainly toward Melba, Eric silently asked if he was handling things right.
Teary-eyed, Melba nodded reassuringly.
Even without Melba’s answer, Eric could sense Joy relaxing gradually in his embrace, her sobs quieting.
“Hey.”
Joy nestled in his arms, speaking through her sniffles.
“Yes?” Eric immediately tilted his head, listening intently. “What's wrong?”
“Strawberry milk,” Joy said shyly. “I want strawberry milk.”

“Oh no!” Eric groaned, genuinely upset. “I completely forgot to bring any!”
Frustration flickered across his face, his regret unmistakable.
He'd met Joy multiple times, yet it hadn't crossed his mind to buy her favorite drink.
“Hold on just a second.”
Balancing Joy carefully, Eric quickly dialed a number. “It’s me. Bring sstrawberry milk over right away, yes
-quickly.”
When the call ended, he turned back toward Joy with a reassuring smile.
“Don’t worry, Joy. Your favorite strawberry milk will be here before you know it.”
“Really?”
Joy looked up with eyes shimmering, and then threw her little arms around Eric's neck tightly. “You're the best! |
like you so much!”
Laughing softly, Eric hugged her close. “I like you too, Joy-more than you can imagine.”
Quietly, Hadley stood near the doorway, watching the tender moment unfold in silence.
She had barely stepped out for a moment, and there was Eric already by Joy’s side? The connection between him
and his daughter felt almost uncanny.
Wiping the tears from her eyes, Hadley discreetly moved to the side...
Shortly after, Phillips showed up with the strawberry milk that Joy had requested.
“Mr. Flynn...”
As he approached with the bag, Phillips was puzzled-what was Eric doing here with such a young girl?
He couldn’t help but notice her beauty; she was perhaps the most charming child he had ever seen.
“Okay.”
Eric gave a quick nod. “Please open one.”
“Sure thing.”
Phillips retrieved a pack from the bag and put the straw in place before passing it to Eric.
Eric then held the pack to Joy’s mouth. “Here’s your favorite strawberry milk, Joy.”
“Mm.” Joy stayed cuddled up, simply opening her mouth to drink from the straw.
As she drank, her cheeks puffed out, and she seemed to perk up a bit.
Eric watched her with a gentle expression. “Joy really knows how to enjoy her milk.”
Phillips was taken aback.
It was amazing how even a simple act of drinking milk could earn such praise!
Before leaving, Eric handed Melba a contact number. “If Joy feels sick or misses me, please call this number.”

After pondering for a second, he added, “You can reachanytime.”
“Okay...”
Melba looked at Joy, hesitated, but then accepted the number with a nervous bite of her lip, “Got it
She couldn't help but feel this man was genuine.
He seemed decent, likely with considerable means or influence, definitely not someone untrustworthy. After all,
Joy had nothing to lure a deceit.
Joy pulled on Eric’s finger. “Are you going?”
Melba, anticipating that Joy might get clingy, quickly said, “Joy, behave yourself. He has important matters to
attend to.”
“Oh.” Joy's little face fell into a pout.
“Don’t worry.”
A twinge of sorrow hit Eric. “Cheer up, Joy. I'll cto see you again, alright?”
“Okay.” Her expression brightened immediately,
Joy extended her little finger and said, “Pinky promise, no lying!”
“Of course.” Caught off guard but smiling, Eric looped his finger with hers. “I won't lie. Now, | have to go.”
“Bye-bye!”
The duo reluctantly parted.
After Eric and Phillips had left, Hadley quietly made her entrance into the room.
She had strategically waited for Eric to leave before she felt comfortable stepping in.
“Mommy!” Joy was visibly happier. “You're here!”
“Yes, sweetie.”
Managing her emotions and smiling, Hadley unveiled the thermal container she brought. “Were you waiting
long? Here's your favorite pie, all ready to eat.”
Even after leaving the hospital, Eric's thoughts lingered on what he could possibly do for Joy.
Though not his daughter, he felt an inexplicable bond with her.
His phone interrupted his reverie.
It was Ernest calling.
“Ernest,” Eric answered with a swipe.
From the other side, Ernest’s voice cthrough. “Eric, head over to Maple Bay. There's something important
we need to discuss.”
