Chapter 157 Never Separate Again
“What?”
Eric was startled. The innocence of such a young child asking about something so profound like death caught
him off guard.
He observed Joy, clad in a small hospital gown, which reminded him that she was not just any child; she was a
patient here. What could her condition be?
The thought of explaining the concept of death to a child so young seemed daunting.
After a brief pause, Eric chose his words carefully. “It’s like traveling to a place that's very, very far away.”
“Far away?” Joy's small forehead creased in thought. “Does that mean | can’t see my mom anymore?”
“Yes, that’s right,” Eric responded slowly, regretting the confirmation.
He reflected on how often Joy mentioned her mother, yet never her father. Her attachment to her mom was
evident.
“Oh,” Joy muttered, her expression turning somber. “Thanks, | get it now.”
“Joy!” The call cfrom across the room.
It was the snurse as before, calling out with urgency. “Joy!”
Joy waved enthusiastically. “She’s calling for me. | have to go now! Bye-bye!”
“Goodbye...”
Eric hadn't even finished his thought when the little girl had dashed away. He remained crouched down,
watching the nurse scoop Joy up and hurry off with her.
A shadow fell over his emotions unexpectedly.
Was it the thought of this brief encounter ending, knowing she might soon be heading to “a faraway place“?
“Joy!” The urgency in Hadley’s voice echoed through the hospital corridor.
Spotting the nurse with Joy in her arms, Hadley moved swiftly toward them, her face etched with concern.
“Mommy...”
“Where did you wander off to?”

Hadley grabbed Joy and gave her a light pat on the bottom. To her, that was as harsh as a punishment could
get!
“Didn’t | ask you to stay put? Why weren't you listening? You know you're supposed to be resting.”

Tears erupted from Joy as her little face crumpled in distress.
At the sight of her daughter in tears, Hadley’s resolve melted away-her heart was breaking!
At such a moment, it was unbearable.
Tears mirrored in her own eyes, Joy noticed her mother’s distress and sobbed even louder.
“Mommy!”
With a trembling hand, Joy clumsily reached out to touch her mother’s face, trying to wipe away her tears.
“Mommy, don’t cry. Joy was wrong.
“Explain to me...” Hadley’s voice wavered as she fought to maintain her composure. “Why didn’t you stay in
your bed?”

Joy's voice shook with fear. “Someone said | was going to die. | wanted to understand what that
Hadley’s heart skipped a beat, her body turning ice cold.
Beside them, the nurse's face showed discomfort.
“It appears Joy accidentally overheard sconversation... | will find out who was talking.”
“Mommy.” Through her tears, Joy pleaded, “Don’t cry, don’t be scared... Joy won't leave, won't go to a faraway
place and leave you alone.”
What?
Hadley was taken aback, struggling to grasp what Joy was trying to convey.
“A nice mister just toldthat dying means going to a very faraway place.”
Clinging to her mom, Joy continued, “Mommy, I'm brave. I'm not scared of going to a faraway place, but | don’t
want to be away from you. You don’t want to be away fromeither, right? | don’t want to go anywhere! | just
want to stay with Mommy! Waaah...”
Tears streamed down Joy's face uncontrollably, pulling at Hadley’s heartstrings.
Her little girl, so innocent yet so aware of her deep bond with her mother!
“Joy!”
Hadley wrapped her arms around Joy soothingly. “Don’t cry, my darling. You're not going anywhere. This time,
when | return to Srixby, you're coming with me. We'll always be together from now on.”

Joy's tears ceased immediately, her eyes shining with hope as she gazed up at her mother.
“Really, Mommy?”
“Yes, my love.”
Hadley, tears still in her eyes, tenderly wiped away Joy's tears.
She had initially left Joy in Blathe primarily for her surgery.
With the donor now backing off and the surgery off the table, staying apart no longer made sense.
“Yay!”
Joy’s mood transformed instantly, her excitement palpable.
“I'm going hwith Mom! Being with Mom is the best!”
For a child, their mother’s presence was their sanctuary, their home.
“My little darling.” Hadley chuckled as she lifted Joy, teasing her gently. “You've cried enough. Let's clean up and
get you ready for bed.”
“Okay!”
Back in his room, Eric pondered, phone in hand, whether to call Hadley or perhaps visit her at the hotel.
The phone's ring broke the silence in Eric’s room.
“Eric?” It was Marshall on the line, his tone laced with urgency. “Are you still in Blathe? | need your help with
something. Denver's been in an accident, and | can’t make it there. Can you check on him?”
Confusion and concern washed over Eric.
An accident? Denver?
His voice tightened with worry. “What exactly happened, Marshall?”
“It’s a car accident. That's all | know,” Marshall responded, his voice strained. “Aunt Wilma was too upset to give
“Understood,” Eric replied, his decision firm.
Helping a friend in dire straits required no second thoughts.
“Ill take care of it. I'm on my way now.” Eric assured Marshall.
“Appreciate it,” Marshall replied before ending the call.
Eric wasted no tand rushed to the hospital's emergency department.

Wilma turned, her distress evident. She clutched Eric’s arm. “Eric, thank God you're here. It’s Denver...”
“Don’t worry, Mrs. Moran. I'm here now.”
“Thank you, Eric.”
After signing the necessary forms, the medical team wheeled Denver into surgery.
Eric watched as Wilma sat on a nearby bench, visibly shaken. His thoughts drifted to Hadley. Was it right to call
her?
Denver's accident was undoubtedly tied to their recent troubles.
What if Denver didn’t make it? Didn't Hadley deserve a chance to see him, possibly one last time?
But was it the right decision?
Could their separation be maintained if Denver recovered?
After wrestling with his thoughts, Eric finally picked up his phone and called Hadley.
There was a delay before she picked up. “Hello.”
Hadley actually wanted to ignored the call but was also worried Eric might persist.
“What's the matter?”
“Hadley. Denver's been in an accident,” Eric explained, his voice firm despite the circumstances. “He's in surgery
now. Would you like to cover?”
The n“Denver” sent a shock through Hadley.
She gripped her phone tighter, unable to respond immediately.
The urgency of the situation was clear; she needed to be there.
Meanwhile, Eric ended the call with a weary smile.
Could her silence mean more than concern? She hadn’t even hung up properly...
