Tessa could feel it. This instinct is too strong to ignore.

Victor glanced at Silas. “You heard that?”

Silas nodded. “Yeah.”

Downstairs at the hotel, Lewis stood in front of Dale, blocking his way upstairs. Just seeing Lewis made Dale's

blood pressure spike.

Of course, Lewis wasn't exactly all smiles either; he rolled his eyes so hard they nearly flew out of his head.

It was the perfect example of mutual disdain-you don’t like me, and | sure as hell don’t like you.

Fuming, Dale had already gone through several cigarettes. “I just want to see my daughter. Why are you people

stopping me?”

He ground his teeth.

Arms crossed, Lewis replied, “You've got plenty of daughters-you can see any of them you want. But this one,

even if she looks a little like you, | still don’t think she’s yours.”

“You-" Dale started.

Lewis cut him off casually. “I've got a friend who's a urologist. Wantto book appointment?”

Really, the whole thing was just... strange.

It wasn’t just Tessa who had this gut feeling that Dale wasn’t her father.

Even Lewis felt it-he just didn’t buy it.

Dale’s breathing quickened. “You two are going too far!”

you a discreet

“Not too far,” Lewis said smoothly. “Just honest. And honestly, it’s weird-those twin girls were ugly as hell, so |

figured they couldn't be yours. But now your ‘daughter’ actually looks a little

you, and somehow she still doesn’t feel like yours either.”

The elevator doors slid open just as Silas stepped out-and immediately overheard Lewis’ baffled voice aimed

right at Dale.

Silas went quiet.

someone off.

Dale’s face turned an ugly shade of green from rage.

And Trevor, standing behind him, couldn’t stand to watch his boss take it anymore.

He yanked something from his belt and leveled it at Lewis.

Lewis arched a brow. “Oh? Telling the truth’s a crnow?”

“I just want to see my daughter,” Dale bit out, his lips pressed into a thin line.

“See what daughter?” Lewis shot back. “For all you know, none of those kids are yours. Maybe go hand sort

out your bloodline first before pestering our Ms. Tessa!”

“Are you looking to die?” Trevor barked, shoving the weapon against Lewis’ chest.

But Lewis wasn’t the kind of man who scared easily. His eyes went cold in an instant.

Trevor sneered, “You have any idea where you are, kid? Say one more word, and I'll rip that mouth right off your

face!”

He meant it too-he looked ready to do it.

But before the threat even finished leaving his lips, Lewis moved. His hand shot out like lightning, twisting

Trevor's wrist until a sharp crack echoed through the air.

Whatever he was holding hit the floor with a heavy thud-followed by Trevor's muffled grunt of pain.

Lewis, who'd looked lazy a moment ago, brushed his hands off with a disdainful snort. His eyes were full of

contempt.

Trevor clutched his wrist, his face pale with pain.

Dale’s expression darkened even further-but Lewis’ mouth just wouldn't stop. “I'm only telling the truth, and you

still don’t believe me.”

“Wouldn't it be better to go hand make sure of things before you chere, bothering our Ms. Tessa?”

Dale said nothing.

By now, Silas had stepped up beside Lewis. Dale glanced at him; Silas spoke evenly. “She can’t do anything

about the Ashen Pact.”

Dale's chest heaved.

no man could stomach.

Finally, he let out a cold snort, spun on his heel, and stormed off.

Meanwhile, upstairs, Tessa sat in the suite as Victor carefully picked the yolk out of her egg.

Her lips curved into a pout. “I want the yolk.”

“Better not,” he said gently. “Be good.”

He'd looked it up last night-people with colds and a bit of a cough shouldn't eat egg yolks.

“When can | eat it, then?” she muttered.

Heaven help her, the yolk was her favorite part. She didn’t even like the white that much.

“When your cough’s gone,” Victor replied.

“Oh,” she said in defeat.

Just then, her phone buzzed with an unfamiliar number. She answered. “Hello?”

“It's me.”
