Chapter 183

Hailey had thought about what it would be like the next tshe saw Owen, but the never imagined it would be

like this

Now, she stood there, frozen, her expression blank.

It seemed like Owen didn’t even notice her. He turned his head, his face soft at he spoke to Gracie.

She couldn't hear a word they were saying-her mind was too focused on him.

She stared at Owen for what felt like an eternity before his gaze finally met hers.

“You two know each other?” Gracie asked, unable to hold back as she watched their eyes lock.

Hailey snapped back to reality and noticed Gracie’s arm hooked around Owen's. What's their relationship?

“We know each other, but we're not close,” Owen's indifferent voice cut through the air and pierced Hailey’s

heart.

It felt like a sharp pain, as if her chest was being squeezed.

She forced a smile and said to Gracie, “Yes, not close. Thanks for the jacket, Miss Burke. | have to go now, there's

something | need to take care of.”

“Well, alright then, Miss Dalton. See you next time,” Gracie replied, her smile warm.

Hailey’s expression remained unchanged, her demeanor calm as she walked past them.

As she passed by, she heard Owen's low, gentle voice calling her name. “Hailey...”

Her steps faltered, but her mind immediately raced to one thought: He's not calling me.

She lowered her head and quickened her pace.

“Hailey!” Kaiden rushed out from the private room, worry in his eyes as he approached her. “Are you alright?”

Hailey shook her head. “I'm fine. A kind lady lenther jacket. Let's go inside.”

Kaiden eyed the jacket she was wearing, annoyed at himself for being late. He could only accompany Hailey

back into the private room.

Dinner passed in a blur. Hailey couldn’t remember how she finished her meal, but she was smiling through the

whole thing.

She wasn’t one to speak much, and since she’d only just met these colleagues today, there was even less to say.

By the tdinner was over and they were leaving the restaurant, it was already 10 p.m.

Hailey had drunk a few glasses of wine, and since it had been a while since she last drank, her stomach was a bit

upset. She wasn’t exactly dizzy, but her face had lost its color.

“Hailey, letdrive you home,” Kaiden offered. He had a car and looked at her with concern.

Hailey shook her head. “No, it’s not far from my place. I've had a drink, and | just want to walk it off. You all go

ahead, don’t worry about me.”

“That's not a good idea, you're a girl, and it’s late. What if you run into sbad people?” Kaiden insisted.

“Don’t be so fussy, Kaiden. She said no,” Mia mocked, unable to stand Kaiden'’s attention on Hailey.

Hailey felt a headache coming on. Mia's hostility was obvious to anyone with eyes.

She didn’t care about Kaiden, but she didn’t want to make enemies for no reason. Right now, all she could do

was try to avoid him as much as possible. She hoped Kaiden would get the hint and stop.

Kaiden’s face flushed with slight embarrassment from Mia’s remark.

Hailey said, “I'm really fine. | just want to take a walk and enjoy the night. Wothaland is much safer than

overseas, nothing will happen. It’s getting late, so you should all go home. You'll be late for work tomorrow, and

if anyone is late, | won't go casy on them.”

Having said that, Kaiden couldn't argue further. He reluctantly opened the car door and got in.

Mia and another female colleague joined him.

“Alright, see you tomorrow,” they all said.

“See you tomorrow,” Hailey replied with a faint smile.

She watched as her colleagues left before she let out a sigh of relief and started walking toward her apartment.

The night breeze was cool.

Walking alone on the unfamiliar city streets, Hailey felt an unusual sense of loneliness. But it was still better than

being abroad. At least in Wothaland, if she felt like it, she could grab sbarbecue and a drink.

But after unexpectedly running into Owen tonight, and seeing him with another woman, Hailey felt drained and

had no mood for anything.

She wandered aimlessly, her mind replaying the image of Owen being gentle with another woman. And that

line-“We know each other, but we're not close.”

They were now strangers, no longer the people they once were.

She had always known this day would come, but she never thought it would arrive so quickly.

She had just returned to Wothaland three days ago, and now, she had already bumped into him.

Hailey didn’t know whether to call it fate or coincidence.

Her heart felt empty, like a crucial piece was missing.

He seemed to be doing well, surrounded by new people. If it hadn't been for this chance encounter, they

probably would never cross paths again in this lifetime.

But after tonight, they likely never would. This was just a random meeting, and she doubted they would meet

again.

There weren't that many coincidences in the world.

Hailey sighed softly, a faint sense of cold creeping in, though she wasn’t sure if it was the night air or the

emotions swirling inside her.

She pursed her lips and quickened her pace toward home.

Once she got home, Hailey felt a headache coming on-probably from the alcohol. She made herself a cup of

honey before heading to the bathroom to take a shower and try to sleep.

Halfway through her shower, Hailey suddenly thought she heard something outside.

She quickly rinsed off the soap, put on her bathrobe, wrapped her wet hair, and prepared to check it out.

As her hand touched the bathroom door handle, there was a loud bang from outside—the sound of a door

slamming.

Her heart skipped a beat. Is there a thief?

She took a deep breath, glanced around, and grabbed the mop from the bathroom, preparing to rush our

Footsteps approached, growing louder.

Hailey’s heart raced as she listened to the sound getting closer.

The bathroom door was made of glass, and she could vaguely make out a tall figure outside,

She took a deep breath and flung the door open, charging toward the figure with the mop in hand.

But as soon as she saw his face, her eyes went wide.

At that moment, she couldn't stop herself.

Owen raised his hand and calmly grabbed the mop’s handle, halting her steps.

Hailey stopped, staring at his face in shock.

Owen looked down at her, his brow furrowed in confusion.

After a few seconds, they both spoke at the stime. “What are you doing here?”

Owen's expression deepened in concern.

Hailey lowered the mop and turned on the light. “This is my apartment.”

Owen, dressed in a black suit, looked much the sas he had years ago, but also strangely different. His eyes

no longer held the warmth they once had.

“This is my apartment,” Owen said, his gaze cold as he looked at her.

Hailey furrowed her brow. “You're the landlord?”

Owen nodded. “Who rented you this place?”
