Loving Mom 251

Chapter 251

Still, there was something strangely satisfying about stirring the pot like this.

Carter was never one to explain much. He looked over at Nate and said calmly, “Nate, apologize to Sharon.”

Nate clearly wasn’t happy about it. But with Kelly's illness hanging over his head, he swallowed his pride.

“Sharon, | was just messing around. You didn’t have to take it so seriously, right?”

Sharon didn’t seem bothered by his half-hearted tone. She smiled faintly.

“If you don’t want to apologize, that’s fine. Since you and Kelly are so close, testing the medicine for her

shouldn't be a problem,

should it?”

Nate looked doubtful.

“Didn’t you just say all medicine carries stoxicity? | don’t have Kelly's illness-what if it messesup?”

Sharon leaned in just slightly, still smiling. “Sure, you don’t have a terminal illness. But aren’t you poisoned

anyway? The first round is mild-it even includes detox ingredients. It won't hurt your face. Might even help.”

She dangled the black pill between her fingers.

“This pill’s ingredients are rare and expensive. Don’t let the number fool you-just over a dozen of them, but it

took a full seven days and countless steps to make.”

Nate blinked, clearly caught off guard by how serious she sounded. “That impressive?”

Sharon shrugged. “Not that impressive. If it really worked miracles, Kelly's illness would've been cured already,

wouldn't it?”

Still half-skeptical, Nate reached out, took the pill from her, and raised it to his mouth.

Just before swallowing, he paused and narrowed his eyes. “Sharon, if anything happens to me, you're dead.”

She gave him a serene smile. “If anything happens, you're welcto cfind me.”

Truthfully, medicine boiled with foot-soaked water usually wasn’t a problem.

As for the rat droppings and cockroaches... well, she'd asked Uriah. He said it shouldn't be a big deal. It was not

like anyone ate rat droppings daily. And cockroaches-technically-were high in protein.

Nate, reassured by her confidence, swallowed the pill in one gulp.

Then he waited.

Half an hour passed. Nothing strange happened. He didn’t feel sick, dizzy, or even the slightest discomfort.

Finally, he exhaled.

“Looks like it’s fine. Kelly, you should take it too. The sooner you start, the better your chances.”

Kelly stared at the pitch-black pill in her hand, struggling with herself.

It didn’t look the least bit appetizing. She really didn’t want to take it.

But if she refused to even take the medicine, it would be a little too obvious, wouldn't it?

She steeled herself, took a sip of water, and swallowed the pill.

Sharon smirked inwardly. She'd need to give the second round of pills a bit more thought.

Once both of them had taken the medicine, she began gathering the rest of the pills.

Nate spoke up again. “Didn’t you say earlier that you'd give Kelly one full course first? Why are you taking the

pills back? How's she supposed to continue treatment?”

Sharon replied calmly, “Kelly needs to take one pill every three days. But for the next month, she’ll need to come

here for each

dose.

“The first stage of treatment is crucial. If she doesn’t take the medicine properly-say she secretly dumps it—then

you'll just turn around and blme for it not working,”

Nate protested, “Con! This is her life-saving medicine-why would she throw it away? That's not even

possible!”

Sharon glanced at Kelly with a faint, unreadable expression.

That one look made cold sweat trickle down Kelly's back

Could Sharon know? Know she was faking her illness?

No... no way.

If Sharon knew, she would've exposed her already. She would've run straight to Carter and tattled.

But even if Sharon did know.....

She wasn't afraid.

Because-
