Chapter 445: Space Battle [Part-2]

Immediately upon seeing the commander they snapped to attention, saluting and straightening as if they were frozen statues. I wrinkled my nose at the strong odor wafting from them. It wasn’t pleasant or foul... just odd, an earthy musky odor with a metallic tang that set my teeth on edge.

The smell is unique to elves, especially the ancient who have lived over a thousand years. It’s one reason races like dragonkin, balors, vampires, demons and others find them unappealing, their more sensitive noses suffer more and their stomachs turn quicker in close quarters.

Older elves can curb it by bathing monthly in specially treated water, but the soldiers here clearly hadn’t bothered or perhaps hadn’t had the supplies.

As we passed, the scent worsened, but I endured it and we entered another section of the ship where a different group of elves were stationed (not smelly). The space looked like a large control room with several modules and flickering holographic screens. Consoles blinked with stratified information, holograms swam in the air, and a low processor hum threaded the room. About fifty tall dark elves in white uniforms with a red emblem moved about—swalked, others sat operating the consoles.

In the far corner sat a slightly larger chair, surely the commander’s seat. Around it, additional glyph-laced panels suggested this seat had access to strategic overlays. He motioned forto take it; I obliged and as I sat the room lighting dimmed slightly while the modules and panels glowed brighter, bathing the floor in pale blue.

"Her Majesty has issued an order. Mr. Ben will take command today; everyone must obey his orders! Any who disobey will be severely punished!" the commander barked, and the elves answered with a unified "Okay sir!"

I issued my first order at once.

"Advance to the enemy position. Only the mother-ship. All other vessels stay behind," I said.

Silence fell; they stared as if I were insane, the words hanging like a blade between us.

"Sir! That’s a death sentence!" the commander protested, his knuckles whitening around the edge of the console.

"Weren’t you ordered to follow my command? Take only the mother-ship to the enemy’s position," I pressed, keeping my voice cold and controlled.

"I’m afraid we cannot, sir—not even by disobeying Her Majesty. Humans possess sophisticated weapons, suntested. We can’t risk the mother-ship," he replied, refusing my command again.

I sighed and walked to a meek elf before a large holographic screen—the pilot, I guessed. He looked nervous, his fingers hovering above a crystalline keypad.

"Can you givethe coordinates of the enemy position?" I asked. The elf glanced at the commander, then back at me.

"O-okay," he stammered, tapping at the computer and overlay maps blooming into the air, coordinates painting themselves across the holo-space.

"Sir! What are you trying to do? We can’t—"

"Just shut the fuck up! You keep hindering me. You didn’t even ask why I want only the mother-ship or what I plan. Now I’m asking for coordinates, and you still nag. What kind of commander are you?" I snapped, my voice sharp. The room fell silent as every head turned. My eyes flared briefly, glowing bright red, and the machines hummed with the sudden tension. They flinched, but no one moved; the commander swallowed his objections and a murmur spread through the room.

"I—I’m sorry. I’m just worried because our equipment is outdated compared to the humans’. I couldn’t tell Her Majesty; it would only make her worry," the commander stammered.

I exhaled, realising I’d overreacted.

"You’re a high elf. How are you even a commander under Myr—ahem, Her Majesty?" I asked.

"Actually, the coalition has two commanders: a dark elf and a high elf. But because the High Elf Queen lacks war experience, she decreed the Dark Elf Queen should lead the coalition army. The second commander is currently stationed across the enemy position," he replied.

Everything fell into place. It seemed the High Elf Queen had handed Myra authority but in truth she’d shifted responsibility onto Myra’s shoulders so Myra would take the blif things went wrong.

"I’ll advance on the enemy myself. I need a small ship to get close. You will remain here and defend the plin case of any unforeseen events," I ordered.

"B-But sir—"

"Do as I say!" I snapped. The commander ground his teeth, then turned and ordered soldiers to ready a small craft. After collecting the coordinates from the meek pilot, I boarded. They chose a fully armed battle ship that could hold about seven people. Inside, it felt new—a next-generation model, unused. I understood then why the commander had been anxious.

"Mr. Ben, do you want a crew?" he asked.

"No. They’d only be in danger," I replied.

As I moved to close the hatch, the commander gripped my shoulder. "I will follow you, sir, even if it costsmy life. It would be disgraceful to sit idle. My assistant will take over while I’m away," he pleaded.

Seeing the resolve in his eyes, I relented and told him to board. I punched in the coordinates, engaged autopilot, and threw the thrusters to full power. With a burst, our ship launched from the mother-ship and streaked into space. I was surprised at its speed, almost lightning-fast—its hull built to warp short distances through wormholes.

Half an hour later we surfaced over what looked like a shipyard. At first I thought it was the enemy’s staging area, but the commander informedit was the second commander’s position. The meek pilot had given coordinates that kept us from landing among the enemy. Still, I could see the human fleets, countless battle ships and one massive mother-ship. An advanced vessel that would have utterly torn through the elves’ fleet; similar to the model I’d ordered on the vampire world.

The commander broadcasted to the second commander’s command centre, ordering them to stand down.

"So, what will you do now?" he asked.

"I’ll get close and try to make them leave. If they refuse, I’ll destroy them. None will be left," I muttered. The commander stared atlike I’d lost my mind. I pushed the throttle forward and dove toward the humans at full speed, an evil grin spreading across my face.
