Chapter 417 417: We have an emergency...

With Lady Matilda stepping out of the hospital lobby, Julian stood rooted watching as Donald helped her into the

car, before long the car zoomed off.

His gaze still trained towards the direction the car left, emotions swarmed through his heart just as thoughts

coursed through his mind.

"Julian," Josh called, his voice piercing through his thoughts. Slowly, Julian retracted his gaze. "Are you through

with meeting?"

Julian sighed. "Yes, how is my sister?" he asked, his voice flat and low.

Josh felt the Julian before him now was a bit off. His heart clenched, his thoughts brimmed with questions.

What had he discussed with Lady Matilda before his arrival?

Why had he suddenly turned cold?

"Julian, are you okay?" he asked with unsteady breath.

Julian nodded. But then he couldn't help the bitterness swelling in his heart. And sof the questions coursing

through his mind, "Dad," he called tentatively.

Josh had an ill feeling about his call but with everything already crashing down, he braced himself for whatever it

is.

"Yes," Josh answered.

"After the Anderson family suppression of the Santiago market capital, then you broke off the engagement, did

you take any step to keep things afloat?"

Josh stared at him without offering any response.

Julian called again. "Dad, did you understand what | mean?"

Josh kept silent. Julian stared at him for a bit longer. From his father's silence, Julian understood his answer. He

never did.

Now that he thought about it, when he tried to investigate his mother's family, it seemed to have been blocked.

When he probed his father, he asked him to leave the matter at that because the matriarch had a hand in it.

His father had only said, "Your mother's family nis Santiagos."

Julian looked at his father briefly, his gaze narrowing. It seems Lady Matilda is right, this score had to be settled.

One cannot always be a coward just because of an inheritance he could build for himself with his skill and

knowledge.

Josh swallowed hard. "Julian, can we discuss this later? | mean your sister's health should be paramount now?"

"Why not meet with Davis to discuss?" Julian asked.

Josh exhaled deeply. "Julian, Davis refused."

Julian smiled lightly. "If he refused then let it be, my sister is already taking her treatment."

"I know she is already, but we can still take her back since she hasn't woken up."

Julian nodded. "Dad, you are right, but | advise you let my sister remain in this hospital, besides she is already

married."

"Married, | know but..." Josh started, but Julian's death glare made his words pause.

"Dad, don't you think you should let this matter be." Julian smirked.

Josh sighed. "Alright."

"Dad, the driver should take you back to my place, | have to see my sister." Julian said and made his way into the

elevator.

Josh's shoulders sagged with fatigue. He felt tired, tired of every mistake and error he had made in the past.

He glanced back at the elevator, but Julian had long disappeared. Josh sighed.

He walked towards the car, the driver stepped out and opened the door for him.

Josh boarded the car and left the premises.

Meanwhile, upstairs, Davis was ready to leave the hospital when Julian walked up to him. After exchanging

pleasantries, they walked over to the waiting room.

They settled down. "I hope you are not offended with my father's words?" Julian asked.

"Not in any way, his worries are right," Davis replied.

Six days later, the hospital halls echoed with hushed relief. The twins were finally discharged from the NICU after

passing a series of tests and showing stable indicators of health.

Davis and Deborah carried them gently, wrapped snugly in white blankets, their tiny hands wriggling against the

soft fabric.

From the NICU, they made their way to the ICU. Though the children were scheduled to be sent hwith

Deborah, Davis had insisted they first visit their mother.

For convenience, he had employed another elderly caretaker to assist Deborah in tending to the newborns, yet

no amount of help eased the weight in his chest.

Standing outside the ICU ward, Davis held the children...his son cradled in his right arm, his daughter nestled in

his left.

His heart ached with bitterness. He had hoped foolishly perhaps that by the tthe twins were discharged,

Jessica would be awake, ready to hold them, to smile at them, to whisper their names.

But his hopes had been dashed. Utterly destroyed. Even after consultations with another team of renowned

doctors, she remained unresponsive. Weeks had passed, yet her body gave no sign of returning to them.

Davis had never felt so broken. Not even on the day of the accident had despair weighed this heavily on him.

Today, as he stood there with their children in his arms, the pain hollowed him out.

Beside him, Deborah's eyes glistened, her cheeks streaked faintly with tears.

She stared at the tiny faces of the babies, their delicate fingers twitching beneath the blankets. The sight pierced

her heart.

Davis inhaled deeply and pushed the door open. Inside, the ICU was quiet except for the steady hum of the

monitors. He approached the bedside in slow, heavy steps, then sank into the chair.

Clasping Jessica's cold hand in his, he lowered his head. His voice cracked, breaking the eerie silence. "Babe, the

children are here. Safe and sound. Yet you aren't awake."

A bitter chuckle slipped from his lips. "Never expected it would take this long...for you to speak to me, to open

your eyes and see our kids, to tellwhere you hurt."

His voice trembled, a reflection of the pain he had carried for weeks.

Each word was heavy, soaked in desperation. The silence of the ward seemed to mock him, amplifying his grief.

After a long moment, he pressed his lips to her hand, inhaled her faint scent, and reluctantly rose. His twas

up.

He carried the children out and sent them hwith Deborah, his heart splintering further with each step.

Three weeks later.

The presidential floor of the Allen Group was cloaked in silence, disturbed only by the rhythmic tapping of keys in

the Secretariat unit nearby.

The air carried the faint scent of polished wood and crisp paper, blending with the sterile chill of the central air-

conditioning.

Inside his office, Davis sat behind the expansive mahogany desk, his back leaned against the chair. Files lay

sprawled across the polished surface, their numbers and reports screaming for attention he could not give.

On his desk, a single portrait of Jessica was dominant, her eyes bright with life.

Davis's gaze, warm and unbearably gentle, lingered on the portrait. Thoughts spiraled endlessly, looping back to

the sunanswered questions.

In the past month, he had visited her bedside countless times. Each visit left him more tormented.

Several times, he had felt the twitch of her fingers against his palm, the faint rise in her body's warmth. Signs,

fragile and fleeting, but signs nonetheless.

Yet she did not wake.

The doctors insisted she was healing. But healing, for five weeks? The words haunted him.

Healing should have meant progress. Awakening. But there was only the quietness shrouding the ward.

He had poured every resource he had

into finding answers. He had m

Yet all of them said the sthing: she needed time.

Twas the only thing Davis felt he was running out of.

As his thoughts sank deeper into despair, his phone buzzed sharply against the wooden surface, startling him.

He snatched it up, and the nflashing on the screen made his pulse quicken.

Already rising to his feet, suit jacket in hand, he answered. "Hello, Dean." His voice was tight with urgency.

"We have an emergency," the Dean's anxious tone cthrough, carrying the weight of dread.

Davis's heart plummeted. Without hesitation, he bolted from the office, his long strides echoing through the hall.

Staff members glanced up in surprise, whispering among themselves, but he ignored their stares. His only focus

was her.

Even as he hurried, he typed out a swift message to Ethan, calling him immediately.

By the tDavis reached the ground floor, Ethan was already waiting.

Their eyes met briefly, no words exchanged. Together, they rushed out, boarded the car, and sped toward the

hospital.

When they arrived, chaos awaited them. Jessica's ICU was crowded with doctors and nurses working frantically.

Machines beeped in sharp, urgent tones, filling the corridor with dread. Davis froze at the sight, his chest

constricting.

His eyes reddened as he clutched the glass panel, watching the medical team fight desperately to stabilize her.

His legs felt weak, his heart threatened to shatter.

It was happening again...the helplessness, the fear, the threat of losing her.

After three long hours, Jessica's body finally stilled. The small spasms had stopped, and only the sound of the

monitors filled the ward.

All he could do was sit there, afraid she might slip away.

Then, her fingers twitched.

"Babe," he whispered, his voice rough. "Babe."

Her eyelids fluttered slowly, heavy and weak, before her eyes finally opened.
