Chapter 399: Tunnel II

Chapter 399: Tunnel II

Thank the heavens, Athena mused, leaning back on the rocky surface, shifting slightly so she stayed away from

plain sight. It was still daytime, so the probability of being caught was very high.

It was good that she hadn't worn her normal work attire—only a t-shirt and plain jeans with white canvas shoes—

otherwise this matter might have been trickier, less flexible.

She opened her phone, brows furrowed as she tapped the screen. The network connection was barely there. She

needed to leave the tunnel if she was ever going to contact her people.

Yet how?

She crouched to her knees, peering out of the tunnel. The twins were still arguing, their voices rising and falling,

and she wondered what they were talking about.

Just then, Cairo cout of the house, hands planted firmly on her waist, glaring at the both of them.

Athena's eyes widened, startled by the sheer dislike emanating from the little girl. Was she really Mary's

daughter?

But the resemblance had been there, she thought. Even now, she concluded silently, taking note of the girl's

mannerisms as she broke the fight between the adults by boldly standing between them.

Was this a usual occurrence? Was that why the girl looked so fed-up, angry, and annoyed?

Athena pressed her lips together, realizing soon enough that this shouldn't be her concern at the moment. She

had to find an inteconnection for her phone. She had to leave the tunnel.

But how could she do so without being seen? Should she return to the hospital and then cback with her

team? What if something or someone tipped the twins off about an intruder, and they packed up and left again?

Lifting her phone, she quickly snapped pictures of the trio, of the house, just before they returned into the old-

modeled building.

Was Herbert aware of this expanse of land where the tunnel led to?

Athena frowned, resting her back on the rocky surface with a sigh. Shouldn't Herbert have checked this place

out, seeing as he knew how the building was structured, or was he not aware at all? How could that be possible?

Athena noted the large area of land where the house stood, and because of the position of the tunnel, she

couldn't see the end of the vast stretch, couldn’t see any road leading to it, couldn't hear any noise depicting

that either.

It was quiet. Too quiet, like she was in another world.

Mildly frustrated with the network issue, albeit pleased with her new discovery, she turned away and started the

fifteen-minute journey back to the hospital.

What a long trek they must have made while rushing out of their secret lab in the hospital when they had been

discovered!

But there was a problem when Athena got to the beginning of the tunnel. She couldn't get past the wall.

She pressed her back to it and slid down like she had done before, yet nothing budged. Panic started budding

within her, clawing at her chest, and even though she tried to stamp it down, it just wasn’t working. Her

breathing turned shallow.

She needed to get out of this space, which she realized—now that her senses were heightened by fear—smelled

of sweat and chemicals.

Maybe they hadn't transported all their stuff in one day, she realized grimly. They might have just pushed the

whole thing into the tunnel and cto pick them up little by little.

Her phone buzzed then, alerting her that it needed to be charged, and Athena released a sharp curse under her

breath. At this rate, she was going to be plunged into darkness if she didn’t get out of here soon enough.

She tried the sliding-down principle again, pressing her back harder, but it still wouldn't budge.

And when she thought it couldn't get any worse, she started hearing voices from down the tunnel. Echoes.

"They're coming," she thought worriedly, her hands beginning to shake, her head beginning to throb.

And unfortunately, she hadn't thought to saddle herself with a gun today. A security team had followed her to

the hospital, and she had thought it unnecessary. Yet, at this moment, she wished she had it.

Not to kill—just to threaten them, to make them at least give up this madness, to make them tell the truth.

But she was not with a gun, and fighting with her fists might not end well. What if they were carrying some

chemical?

Where were they even going? The hospital? Who were they planning to meet in the secret lab? Because that was

the only explanation, the only reasonable factor... someone that would give them intel.

Athena’s hands trembled as the voices drew closer. Were they running or just fast walkers?

She fumbled with her phone, trying to dial Ewan’s number. But there was no network—neither was there a stroke

of luck.

Haphazardly, she tried to unlock the code of the tunnel, rubbing her back against the wall, up and down, doing it

twice, thrice, like an SOS. But nothing was happening.

And just when she thought it was over—that the twins would find out she had wrecked their plans again—the

walls parted, pushing in a shaft of light.

Instantly she turned, part relief and part curiosity flooding her features, eyes widening a fraction when she saw

who was standing before her.

Ewan.

He had come? Didn't he send a reply earlier that he had a business meeting? What was he doing here?

Hearing the echoes of voices again, she discarded her numerous questions and immediately ran into his arms,

clutching him tightly as her breaths began to normalize.

"Let’s leave here, Ewan. They are coming." She grabbed his hand and pulled him along, dragging his surprised

self toward the elevator.
