The soft shuffle of footsteps echoed in the silent room. Before Charlotte could even process what was happening,
she was scooped up into strong arms and carried out of the room.

Fearing she might wake Julius, she stayed silent. As soon as they crossed the threshold, she whispered urgently,
“Putdown.”
But Arthur didn’t. He carried her straight into his private room, gently placing her beside the bed. He stood in
front of her, his eyes never leaving her face.
Charlotte frowned, her patience wearing thin. “What's going
on?”
She caught the unmistakable scent of alcohol on his breath and felt a surge of caution. She didn’t want to
provoke him when he was drunk. God knows what he was capable of when he was drunk.
She tried to stand to distance herself from him.
But Arthur wouldn't let her go. His hands gripped her shoulders firmly, keeping her in place. “Sit down,” he said.
“Letlook at you.”
Charlotte's confusion only deepened. She glanced up at him, meeting his intense gaze. Now, there was a blaze
in his eyes, an intense fervor that caused her heart to flutter wildly. She averted her gaze swiftly, as though the
very sight of him could scorch her.

Arthur didn’t release her hand; instead, he held her gaze, drinking in every flicker of emotion that crossed her
face.

After five years of marriage, he had never truly acknowledged the unique feelings he harbored for her. He was
perpetually on guard against being manipulated, yet in the end, she also fell victim to schemes, making his
caution seem almost laughable.
At this very moment, their relationship hung in the balance, precariously poised on the brink of peril.
Their connection was sustained solely by his efforts and
resources.
When she found out the truth about what happened five years ago, she would leave him. There would be no
stopping her.
The thought of life without her made his chest tighten, an ache settling in his heart. He couldn't bear the thought
of her walking
away.
Suddenly, he leaned closer, his face inches from hers.
Charlotte instantly clamped a hand over her mouth. Her bright eyes were wide with caution as she regarded him.
She knew, without a doubt, that his intentions were far from
pure!
Thus, she remained ever vigilant, determined to thwart any success on his part.
But instead of doing what she feared, Arthur looked down at her small, delicate hand and, to her surprise, leaned
down to kiss

His voice was calm, and his breath was crisp with a faint trace of alcohol, yet his deep gaze was like an infinite
pool with an allure that threatened to pull her into its depths.
Charlotte's eyes abruptly chilled, and with a frosty tone, she declared, “I'm not here to discuss. I just want a
divorce.”
Arthur asked, “Is there really no room for compromise?”
He fixed his deep gaze upon her.
“No,” she said firmly. She didn’t know what ghe was playing, but she was done with the fear that had ruled
her life for the past five years.
She was perpetually on the receiving end of his coldness, treated like an expendable tool. She offered her
wholehearted sincerity and warmth, only to be met with resounding silence.
The thought of being used as merely a stand-in for someone else was especially unbearable, sending waves of
heartache she couldn't suppress.
For five long years, she had been kept in the dark, made to look and act like someone she wasn’t. She had been

Each tthe memory surfaced of her donning clothes styled after Sarah, her makeup mirroring Sarah's, and
seeing hist tender expression directed at this facsimile, she felt a suffocating discomfort!
She had assumed that with Sarah’s return, Arthur would eagerly consent to the divorce. After all, how could a
mere stand-in ever compare to the original?
But he hadn't.
He refused to let her go, and she didn’t understand why.
She wasn’t willing to be a stand-in anymore. She was done sacrificing her heart for someone who didn’t value
her. Was he unhappy with her?
She took a deep breath and met his gaze head-on. “Arthur,” she said. “Tellwhat you want from me. What do
| have to do to make you agree to a divorce?”
Witnessing the icy resolve in her eyes, Arthur found the words he was about to speak lodged in his throat, unable
to escape.
He had been about to tell her that he loved her, that they shouldn't get divorced, and that they could have a
future together.
But she stood firm, and her demeanor was vigilant and devoid of any of the warmth she once exuded.
He felt a surge of irritation, and the complex swirl of emotions in his eyes slowly gave way to a familiar
indifference.
