Chapter 59 Apologizing to Lewis

Josephine was rooted to the spot, clearly stunned. She didn’t know what to do or where else to go. At

the same time, she felt like a clown who thought too highly of herself.

“Leave it there,” Lewis ordered impassively.

Josephine nodded before turning around and leaving the study quietly.

She could hear Sierra’s voice drifting from behind her. “You promised to attend the press conference

with me tomorrow, so you have to show up.”

“Yeah.”

“I hosted a live broadcast yesterday and ended up earning over 100 thousand dollars! Aren’t I

amazing?”

“Yes, you are,” Lewis praised half–heartedly.

“Also, an entertainment agency wants to sign a contract with me! Do you think I should attend the

meeting? Hey, do you think it’s a good idea for me to join the entertainment industry?”

“If that’s what you want, then go ahead. I’ll invest in you.

Josephine couldn’t hear the rest of the conversation. Besides, there was no need for her to continue

listening.

Lewis tended to fulfill Sierra’s every wish. She was akin to a free songbird in his jurisdiction, so she was

free to do whatever she wanted. Sierra could always go out and make new friends. Not. only that, but

she could also throw temper tantrums on a whim and pursue her own dreams.

Sierra was a healthy and normal woman, so she could live her life to the fullest..

On the other hand, Josephine was just mute. That was why she couldn’t lead a good life. Besides, she

was undeserving of one in the first place.

Josephine took a few bites of her dinner before retreating to her bedroom for the night.

She was unable to sleep that night, seeing as her insomnia was getting worse. After tossing and

turning on her bed for over two hours, she realized that Lewis had actually entered her room.

He lay down next to Josephine immediately but did not hug her like usual.

Instead, Lewis turned around so that his back would be facing her. Both of them turned their backs on

each other while lying on the same bed. There was a weird gap between them in the middle of the bed,

which symbolized the rift that separated the sky from the earth.

Josephine gripped her pillow tightly with her eyes closed. She did her best to ignore the hollow.

sensation that came from the side.

The light above her head was so bright that it stung her eyes. Even with her eyes closed, she still felt

that the room was very bright.

Josephine was unable to sleep at all. After waiting for a while, she got out of bed and used the toilet.

After exiting the bedroom, she headed toward the couch in the living room.

There, she curled into a tight ball and buried her head into the crook of her arms to block out all

the light.

About half an hour later, Josephine suddenly felt something being placed on her body. When she

raised her head, she realized it was a quilt.

Lewis was standing right next to her. He was wearing a set of pajamas, and his hair was messy. He

looked younger whenever his appearance was more disheveled and casual.

When Josephine laid her eyes on Lewis‘ bedtime attire every time, she always had a feeling that

she had traveled back in time.

She was stunned for a moment before she quickly sat up.

Lewis sat down next to her while saying, “I’ll find you a job so that you won’t be bored ever again.”

Josephine just stared at him dumbfoundedly. A short time later, she finally raised her hands to start

gesturing at him. “Can I make friends at my workplace?”

Lewis replied, “If that’s what you want, then go ahead. That is, if you’re able to make any friends.”

A glint appeared in Josephine’s eyes. Lewis could be hinting at the possibility of her not being able to

make any friends.

Then again, he was right. She was a mute who couldn’t speak; no one would want to communicate

with her.

Josephine gestured even more. “Where will I be working?”

“What job would you like to take up?”

“I like to sing.”

“You like to sing, hmm?” Lewis chuckled coldly in return. “Are you talking smack to me now?”

Josephine didn’t want to do that to Lewis. It was true that she wanted to sing–it was her greatest dream

that she had kept locked away in her heart, seeing as it was nothing but an impossible wish.

She also wanted to get a divorce, but it was also an impossible wish, just like her desire to sing.

Lewis‘ smile faded away as he gazed at Josephine coolly. “I’ll give you one last chance. What sort of

job would you like?”

Josephine gestured back weakly. “I don’t know.”

It was then that Lewis‘ patience finally ran out. He uttered coldly, “How could you not know that? Don’t

you like doing dishes? Fine, you can do them to your heart’s content!”

Josephine pursed her lips while staring at him unblinkingly in an attempt to locate any trace of him

making it out as a joke.

Unfortunately, Lewis wasn’t joking at all.

He was a vengeful man, after all. When she disappeared for half a month and was found to be a

dishwashing worker in the restaurant, he didn’t care about her at all. Now, he decided to bring up the

past and make a big deal out of it.

Sometimes, Josephine envied Sierra a lot. Even though the latter didn’t have an official title, Lewis still

loved her deeply.

to Lewis

Sierra could go to work whenever she wanted to. If becoming a celebrity was her dream, then Lewis

would support her.

As for Josephine, she was only worthy enough to take on a job that involved washing dishes.

Lewis‘ expression darkened immediately. “It seems that you really love that job. From now on, you’ll

have to be responsible for your own living expenses. That includes the living expenses of the

housekeeper you just hired.”

After he was done speaking, he got up and headed upstairs.

Sometime later, Lewis had already changed into new clothes and left the mansion after descending the

stairs.

In the past, he would never leave the mansion after changing into his pajamas. That decision of his

was more than enough to prove that even principles could be broken.

The next morning, Conrad came to the mansion to fetch Josephine from her workplace.

He took her to a five–star restaurant and led her all the way to the kitchen. There, he entrusted her

to a plump older woman.

Conrad shot Josephine a look of mixed feelings before saying, “Madam, please do your best in this

situation. If you’re unable to handle the stress of this job, you should apologize to President

Alvarez.”

Josephine was surprised to hear Conrad’s advice. Before she could digest the actual meaning, the

latter had already walked away.

The plump woman went over to drag Josephine away. “You’re new here, yeah? Hurry up and do the

dishes! Our staff still needs them! From today onward, you’re in charge of doing all the dishes in this

restaurant! You better be fast, you hear?”

Finally, Josephine understood what Conrad meant. Lewis didn’t find her a proper job; he was just

punishing her even though she had no idea what she had done wrong this time.

Perhaps he was punishing her for interrupting his lovely video call with Sierra.

While Josephine wondered about the cause, she had already shuffled toward the dishwashing area.

Dishes of various sizes took up the entire sink, whereas the baskets on the floor were completely filled

with more dishes. At the same time, more people kept bringing in more dirty dishes.

The restaurant was bustling with customers, so it was natural for the dirty dishes to pile up.,

Soon, the older woman was done telling Josephine the do’s and don’ts when it came to dishwashing.

She had to do the dishes three times and disinfect them afterward. Also, she would be charged a price

between 100 and 500 dollars for each plate she might break, depending on the type of plate she broke.

As for her salary, she would receive 150 dollars per day.

Josephine had no time to calculate the actual money she would be earning, much less worry

about the fatigue that came with the job. She needed the salary to cover her living costs as well as Mrs

Jinkins‘, so she had no choice but to start working.

The young woman stood at the sink and started washing each plate with a rag. Even though she used

hot water to wash the dishes, her hands started showing flecks of paleness after being

soaked in the water for less than an hour.

Josephine wanted to request a pair of rubber gloves, but the older woman was too busy with her own

tasks to even look in her way.

“Hurry up and do the dishes! Your salary will be docked if you can’t provide them with clean. dishes

once they ask for them! Don’t blame me for not warning you in advance!” The plump woman glared at

Josephine before turning on her heel and walking away.

Poor Josephine could only bite her bottom lip quietly before returning to work.

Noon was also rush hour for lunch. Soon, dirty dishes started stacking in high piles. Josephine couldn’t

deal with the dishes on her own.

A long period of time had already passed by then, All of Josephine’s fingers were pruned up and pallid.

Whenever her fingers made contact with something, light tingles of pain would travel through them.

At the same time, the older woman kept urging Josephine to work faster. The more she urged, the

more anxious Josephine became. It was then that she accidentally let go of a plate, causing it to drop

to the floor and shatter into countless pieces.

Instead of scolding Josephine, the plump woman calmly grabbed a small notebook before recording

the broken plate on it. Then she remarked, “Alright, so that’s one plate gone. Clean the mess up

yourself and do the dishes properly.”

Josephine hadn’t recovered from her cold, so she was starting to feel dizzy after standing for a long

time. She grasped the edges of the sink tightly while taking deep breaths in order to steady herself.

Then, she crouched down to pick up the broken shards of the plate and throw them into the trash can.

At that moment, someone bumped into her harshly since they happened to be rushing past her.

A wave of pain surged from Josephine’s finger immediately. It turned out that she had slashed her

fourth finger open with the shards, causing blood to ooze out of the wound.
