“What's wrong?” | asked in a raspy voice that didn’t sound like my
own.
“We need to talk about a few things before we go further,” Alexander said and cupped my face, gently stroking
my skin with his thumb.
For sreason, | thought he was talking about money. “Well, how much money are we talking about?”
This made his expression close off and he pulled his warm hand away from my face. “Forget it,” he said in a stiff
voice and gently movedaside so that he could get off the ground. As he stood, he brushed leaves and twigs
off his body. “It’s late. We should get back to the hotel.”
Clumsily, | got to my feet and staggered to the side. As | stumbled after him, confusion washed over me. What
had | done wrong? From the way he was walking twenty feet ahead ofand his tense posture, | knew that |
had offended him in sway, but | wasn’t sure how.
Back at the hotel, | followed him onto the elevator, as if | was in a trance. My skin was tingling and my head felt
fuzzy as if someone had stuffed it with cotton balls.
When the elevator doors opened on my floor, Alexander handedmy shopping bag filled with the random
items | had bought. Silently, | took the bag without a word, and walked out of the elevator. | had to trail my hand
against the wall of the hallway so | wouldn't fall over as | walked back to my room.
