Chapter 623: You Hate Her That Much?
"That's confidential," Arthur cut in firmly, his eyes narrowing in warning. "But Carl's right. He died doing what he
loves." He glanced at the door, quiet but sure. "And Nnenna can attest to that."
Carl nodded once. "Yes. She was there."
The family looked at each other, uncertainty cracking into belief. Ebere’s hand trembled at her side, her lips
pressing tight.
Abuchi ran a hand over his face, trying to process it all. Obinna leaned back, finally nodding slowly, as though
convincing himself.
"If Nnenna can attest to this..." Obinna murmured, "...then it must be true."
The others followed, their expressions softening into reluctant acceptance.
Only Queen Chioma and Chidera remained rigid, their silence heavy with refusal. Their eyes spoke what their
mouths did not: they didn’t believe a word of it. But seeing the others accept, they had no more ground to stand
on, for now.
"That's it then. Tomorrow evening," Carl said. The rest nodded, the decision sealed.
But Abuchi shifted uneasily in his seat. His lips parted, hesitated, then parted again.
Finally, he leaned forward. "If you don’t mindasking..." His voice trailed, but before anyone could grant
permission, he pressed on, his expression tightening. "No, | want to know. She’s my sister too. What happened to
her legs?"
The words fell heavy in the room.
"That's right," Ebere added softly, her eyes flickering to the door with quiet concern. She had wanted to know
too, but hadn't found the courage to ask. Now that the question was out, the rest of the family turned toward the
three young men. Slooked worried. Some, simply curious.
Carl froze for a moment, jaw tightening. His gaze dropped, then he spoke, voice low and rough.
"She got injured trying to save me."
The silence that followed was suffocating. The guilt in his tone was impossible to miss. For him, those words
weren't an explanation, they were a confession.
He had always believed it was his duty to protect Nnenna, not the other way around. Saying it aloud carved
deeper into that wound.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtDarius’s eyes narrowed slightly, his thoughts turning inward. So that’s what happened. He didn’t say it, but the
puzzle pieces began to form in his mind.
The rest of the family looked shaken. Carl was a prince of one of the most prosperous kingdoms in the world.
What danger could possibly exist that forced Nnenna, their sister, to risk everything for him? The fact Carl hadn't
said more told them it was another matter buried under confidentiality.
Before anyone could break the silence, Queen Chioma scoffed. Her lips curled into something close to a smile,
though it carried no warmth. "Good for her," she said flatly. Then, without shor courtesy, she added, "I hope
it's permanent?"
Six pairs of eyes turned toward her instantly, sharp with displeasure.
The air turned cold.
"You hate her that much?" Arthur's voice cut through the air, low and cold. It carried no effort, yet the weight of
it pressed down on Queen Chioma like a shadow.
For a moment, her lips trembled. Then, fueled by grief and anger over Somto’s death, she forced the words out.
"Y-yes," she stammered, then straightened her back, her tone growing harsher. "That girl is the reason
everything has gone wrong in this castle. Be careful, Prince Arthur. Bad luck follows her. Don’t let her stay close
to you, it can rub off."
Her eyes flicked toward the door, venom sharp, though deep down she knew none of it was true. Still, lies had
always been her favorite weapon, and tonight, she aimed them like daggers, hoping to wedge discord where she
could.
Arthur's eyes narrowed, his expression hard as steel. "I would be the happiest man in the world if she stayed
close to me," he said without hesitation. "Bad luck?" His tone turned sharp with scorn. "It is God who decides
fates, not man."
The room stilled.
Arthur had spoken freely, Nnenna wasn’t present to hear him, or question why he used words like happiest man
in the world. To him, there was nothing to hide as far as she didn’t hear it from him.

And if Nnenna ever clung to that possibility, she might gain not just Arthur's protection, but the kind of life
Chioma had always feared she would reach for.
Grinding her teeth, Queen Chioma forced herself into silence. If something good was bound for Nnenna, she
would do everything in her power to choke it before it bloomed.
After the awkward silence, no one felt like eating anymore. The air was too heavy. Carl, Arthur, and Darius were
soon shown to their guest rooms.
"You guys go ahead," Carl said as they walked down the corridor. "I need to check on Nnenna first."
"I think you should leave her alone," Darius drawled playfully, his grin easy.
Carl glanced at him, his voice gentle but firm. "I don’t expect you to understand what it means to care for your
little sister."
"Don’t be so sure about that." Darius shrugged, still grinning. "I may not have a sister, but I've had girlfriends |

He asked as though he already knew the answer.
Darius tilted his head, pretending to think it over. "Hmm... maybe | haven't had a serious relationship in years."
His grin softened, his tone surprisingly earnest. "But | am serious about your sister."
