Chapter 276

Ella’s POV

+25 BONUS

Over the next week, Anya and | worked on the dress for the charity event. Mostly, | was just there for moral

support; Anya was the one with the real talent when it cto things like this.

Anya designed a beautiful, flowing evening gown that was perfect for just about any occasion. The soft, silky

fabric she picked out draped beautifully on the mannequin, and she even scrimped and saved every spare penny

from her next paycheck to afford faux diamonds to encrust on the straps.

| helped whenever | could, of course, but mostly I just watched while | fed or played with Lucien. Over that week,

Anya and | grew closer. She toldmore about her family-about her mother who was sick with a chronic

immune disorder with expensive treatments, about her father who worked in the mines, and about her two little

brothers who needed books for school.

Anya seemed to be the rock in their family, always sending hwhatever money she could.

And each tshe mentioned them, | kicked myself inwardly for not knowing when | had the chance to help.

Back when | was Luna, | was always more concerned with my personal than the affairs of the people who

served me. Maybe, if | had paid more attention, | would have gotten to know Anya sooner and | could have given

her the money she needed to help her family-or at least a higher-paid position in the pack.

But Anya never complained about her current situation. In fact, it only made her throw herself into the Luna Trial

with more fervor.

| kept telling myself that if anyone had to replace me, it should be her. | still wished that Alexander wasn’t the

way he was, though. Anya deserved better than the life I'd been given before-the one |

died in.

All | could do was hope that, despite being nothing more than a political prop to Alexander, he would treat her

with more dignity and respect than he ever did me. At least he wouldn't assthat Anya was a spy sent to ruin

his life.

That had to count for something, right?

On the evening of the eighth day, after putting Lucien to bed for the night, | found Anya in the servants‘ den with

fabric spread all around her. Lilith was with her, and they were holding up a bag of glass beads.

“Oh! Stella,” Anya said, her face lighting up as | walked into the room. “Just who | was hoping to

see.”

“What's up?” | took a seat in the armchair beside her and propped my feet up on the ottoman.

Anya gestured to Lilith. “Lilith suggested adding sbeading to the dress. | think it's a really good idea, but

I've never done anything like that before. Do you know how?”

1 did, actually. “I know a bit about embroidery. | can help you.”

Anya’s eyebrows shot up. “You do?

My etiquette training had included all sorts of “useful” skills for a future Luna, including basic embroidery. Lilith

met my gaze, knowing exactly what | was thinking.

Of course | couldn't tell Anya the truth, so | just nodded and said, “I don’t know much, but I'm sure we can make

it work.”

Anya looked relieved and touched her

My fingers remembered the motions even if my mind had tried to forget them. Thread the needle, pick up a
