| found Anya still sitting in her room after | left Alexander. She was still clutching the remnants of her beautiful
red curls, now perched on the edge of her bed. Tears streamed down her face and her eyes were red-rimmed
and puffy from crying.
The sight of such a sweet girl looking like that made my heart shatter all over again. And to think that it had
happened all because she was competing for a man like Alexander... But | tried not to focus on that because |
knew it would just makeangrier than | could manage.
“Chere,” | said, pulling out the small pair of scissors I'd taken from the kitchen. “Letfix this mess.”
Anya looked up atwith those big, tear-filled eyes. “You'd really do that for me? | thought about going to the
hairdresser, but | spent all of my remaining paycheck on the dress they cut up last night, and | don’t get paid
again until—"
“Sit down.” | offered her what | hoped was an encouraging smile and patted the stool in front of the small vanity.
“I can’t guarantee a stylist’s cut, but | think we can make this work.”
| spent the next hour carefully trimming and shaping what was left of her hair. Eventually, the jagged mess
turned into a cute pixie cut that actually suited her incredibly well. It enhanced her big eyes and her round face,
making her look like a beautiful starlet from a black and white film.
“There,” | said, stepping back to admire my work. “Much better.”
Anya turned to look at herself in the mirror, and her face lit up as she touched her curls. “Oh, wow. | actually

“You should. It suits you.” And it really did. The short cut gave her a sort of gamine charm that the longer curls
had hidden.
While Anya admired her new hairstyle in the mirror, | set the scissors aside and said, “I've decided to stay in the
trial, by the way. Just to help you.”
The squeal that cout of Anya could have shattered glass. She whirled to look atwith her mouth agape.
“Really? You're really staying? Oh, Stella, this is wonderful! We can help each other through the rest of the trials
and-"
“But | think there's something you should know,” | cut her off. “If you're going to be staying in the trial, I think
you deserve the truth.” | took a deep breath. “Alpha Alexander said that whoever wins will be Luna in nonly.
The marriage will be purely professional. If you think you're going to enter into a loving marriage, this isn’t it.”
