Sloane crouched low, slipping through the bushes-until the snap of a branch cracked behind her. She spun
around; a guard was already raising his gun at her!
The bullet whistled past, grazing her hair. Sloane rolled aside, flinging her last needle in the smotion; the
guard dropped instantly. But the gunshot had already given her away, lights blazed across the entire
estate.
“There she is! Get her!”
Sloane ran with everything she had, lungs burning like fire; her legs felt weighed down with lead. The chase
closed in, bullets sparking against the rocks around her.
She reached the cliff's edge, and despair crashed over her. Below, waves pounded furiously against the rocks,
and the nearest reef was a good twenty meters out.
“What's wrong? Why aren’t you running?” The woman's cold voice slithered from behind.
Sloane turned slowly. The woman stood there flanked by a dozen armed guards, silver mask gleaming under the
moonlight; her gun leveled squarely at Sloane's heart.
“You really thought you could escape?” The woman's laugh was icy. “Go ahead, jump. Straight into the sharks,
there won't even be a body left.”
From the corner of her eye, Sloane caught sight of movement on the sea. A speedboat was cutting fast through
the waves-flying the military's flag. Her heartbeat surged.

shoved a drug-soaked cloth over her mouth and nose. The cloying sweetness of ether flooded her lungs in an
instant.
“Someone cto save you?” The woman whispered against her ear. “Too bad...”
Sloane's nails dug deep into the woman's wrist, leaving five bloody crescents in her pale skin. She forced her
gaze seaward; through the mist, Lucas’ tall figure stood rigid at the bow.
Lucas... Her broken cry was smothered by the cloth, her vision reeling.
The woman yanked her backward, dragging her fully into the shadow of the cliff.
It was a perfect angle-from the water, only jagged rock was visible; no trace of anyone standing above.
Out on the sea, three hundred meters away, Lucas’ chest lurched violently. He lifted his night-vision scope.
searching, but found nothing.
A sudden gust tore across the cliff, whipping Sloane's hair into the air. A flash from the waves reflected into
Lucas’ lens, forcing him to turn his head.
One second-just one fatal second.
