“Huh? Where the hell did they go?” the lead assassin frowned, scanning the area with growing impatience.
The five of them had followed the trail here, thinking it'd be an easy catch. But now, the clearing was completely
empty-just sscattered rocks and a few trampled patches of grass.
“We definitely heard something just now... How'd they vanish so fast?” one of the others muttered, his gun
gleaming coldly under the sunlight.
The leader narrowed his eyes. “They couldn’t have gotten far. They're still nearby. Spread out and search-don’t
let them get away!”
The group split off in different directions, each one moving cautiously. It was clear they didn’t underestimate
their targets.
At that moment, Sloane was hidden high up in a tree, pressed close to the trunk. Her breathing was so shallow it
was barely audible. Through the gaps in the leaves, she watched the movements below, one hand resting lightly
on a hidden dart at her waist.

She knew she had to take them out quietly. If things got loud, it'd alert the rest— and they were seriously
outnumbered.
The first assassin passed directly underneath. With a flick of her fingers, a slender silver needle flew silently
through the air and pierced the back of his neck. His body jerked once, then collapsed in a heap-dead before he
could make a sound.
Sloane didn’t pause. She slid down the tree in one fluid motion and dragged the body into a nearby bush, hiding
it out of sight without making a sound.
The second assassin wasn't far. Using the trees for cover, she crept up behind him. From her waist, she pulled a
long, flexible vine. With one swift motion, she flung it forward-the vine wrapped tightly around his neck like a
striking snake. Before he could react, she stepped behind the tree and yanked hard. He thrashed, gasping, but
quickly went limp.

Sloane hid the second body just as swiftly and moved toward her next target.
The third assassin was noticeably more alert. He kept sweeping his gaze across the area, his gun raised and
ready.
This time, Sloane didn’t get too close. Instead, she plucked a leaf from a branch and flicked her wrist.
The leaf shot through the air and struck the man’s wrist dead-on.
He yelped, dropping his gun in pain.
Before he could recover, Sloane was behind him like a shadow. Her blade flashed, and his throat opened in a
clean, silent slash.
But just as she bent down to move the body, she heard shouting in the distance.
“Where are you?”
Sloane's pulse jumped. The others were getting suspicious. She quickly stashed the corpse and ducked behind a
nearby boulder.
The last two assassins had regrouped, now standing back-to-back, guns up, scanning their surroundings.
“Something's off. They should've checked in by now,” one muttered nervously.
“Stay sharp. That woman's still around here somewhere,” the other said, tightening his grip on his weapon.
Hidden in the shadows, Sloane narrowed her eyes. She knew the element of surprise was gone. Her arm was still
injured-she couldn't win a frontal fight.
All she could do now was wait for an opening.
She slowly shifted to a better position-but her foot snapped a dry twig.
Crack.

“There!” the two men shouted, immediately charging toward the sound.
Sloane's heart dropped.
They'd found her.
