“He's meeting someone to talk business,” Sophia couldn't help but explain on his behalf. “He can’t exactly bringand Theresa

along for that.”

“But...” Susan's frown hadn't eased at all. She privately agreed with Theresa's earlier objection. Given how careful Brandon had

always been with Sophia, even if it was a business meeting, he'd still want her with him—unless it was something she couldn't

know about.

“It's really nothing, don’t worry.” Sophia offered a reassuring smile, but seeing how uneasy Susan still looked—and thinking about

her own situation with Kent, so unresolved—she added, “If you're worried, how about asking Kent to confirm it for you?”

Susan immediately looked awkward and ufortable. “Men always cover for each other. For all we know, he'd help Brandon

keep secrets. Asking him won't help...”

Halfway through, she realized she was just making Sophia feel worse and quickly backtracked, “I'm just rambling. Brandon's the

managing director of a huge corporation; business dinners and meetings are part of the job.”

She hesitated, then continued, “Actually, a few years ago, when | was still at my oldpany, we were trying to get Starlight Hotel

as a client. | was handling the project, and Brandon wanted to get sinfo fromabout you living here in Willow City, so he

had his office coordinate withdirectly. | know a few people from his executive office—should still be at Starlight Group. | can ask

them for you.”

As she spoke, Susan pulled out her phone, apparently preferring to ask around indirectly rather than go straight to Kent, who she

knew would have the most accurate information about Brandon.

But Sophia reached out and gently pressed down on her hand, stopping her. “No need,” she said with a smile. “Actually, | noticed

things seem tense between you and Kent. Maybe you could use this as an excuse to talk to him, clear the air before anything is left

unsaid.”

Susan bit her lip, clearly conflicted. and him... | don’t even know what to say. We were always just good friends, never

imagined being together, much less sleeping together. And now... Well, it's a mess, and | have no idea how to deal with it. That's

why | don’t want to call him.”

She looked over at Sophia. “But if you really want to find out about Brandon, it doesn’t have to be Kent. | can totally ask someone

else for you.”

“Thank you, Susan.” Sophia gave her a grateful look. “But really, there's no need. If | have questions, I'll just ask Brandon directly.

No point in running around behind his back.”

Susan nodded. “You're right.”

She looked at Sophia again. “The main thing is, as long as you're okay. If Brandon ever reverts to his old, insufferable self, just

dump him. We had plenty of fun with just the three of us and Theresa before he showed up anyway.”

Sophia couldn't help but laugh, though she didn’t respond. Theresa, meanwhile, seemed to sense the mood and grew anxious, her

little hand clutching Sophia's arm tightly.

Susan smiled at her. “Aw, I'm just kidding, sweetheart. Look at you, all worried...”

She turned back to Sophia. “As long as you're fine, that’s all that matters. I'm heading hto catch up on ssleep—barely got

any last night, I'm wiped.”

Sophia nodded. “Go get srest.”

“If you need anything, just call me.” Susan made a little phone gesture with her hand. “I'm always here.”

Sophia smiled back. “And the sgoes for you. You don’t have to go through everything alone, okay?”

“l won't.” Susan gave her and Theresa a quick hug, then headed out.

As soon as the door closed, Theresa anxiously tugged at Sophia's sleeve, her lips trembling. “Mommy, | want to see Daddy.”

“Daddy’s busy with work right now, honey,” Sophia said softly, crouching to Theresa's level. “He's meeting speople and can’t

be with us just now. We'll wait for him at home, okay?”

Theresa shook her head furiously. “No! We can wait outside for him. | want to see Daddy.”
