“She went to the bathroom.”

Sophia spoke up, only just remembering that Susan had been gone for a while. She couldn't help glancing toward the restroom, but

Susan was nowhere in sight.

“She’s in the lounge,” Brandon said, answering the unspoken question.

Sophia looked at him in surprise, her eyes searching his face.

Brandon had lowered his gaze, staring at the untouched drink in front of him. His fingers rested lightly on the rim, idly swirling the

glass as if lost in thought—or maybe just waiting for her to say something.

The silence between them grew heavy, so much so that even little Theresa could sense something was off. She paused mid-bite,

her round eyes flickering from Brandon to Sophia, confusion written across her face. Then, in what she thought was a whisper but

was clearly audible, she leaned toward Sophia and asked, “Mommy, what's wrong with Daddy?”

Brandon looked up and offered her a gentle smile. “Daddy’s fine, sweetheart.”

Theresa immediately looked sheepish at being caught, sticking out her tongue at him in embarrassment.

“I was telling Mommy a secret,” she protested, frowning in puzzlement. “How did you know what | was saying?”

Brandon grinned. “Because Daddy's got a little magic bug in Theresa's tummy. Whatever you think or say, Daddy always knows.”

Theresa's eyes widened, and she clapped her hands protectively over her stomach.

Sophia stifled a laugh, reaching over to reassure her. “Daddy's teasing you, honey. He's just really smart—he can usually guess

what you're thinking or saying.”

Theresa mulled that over. “Can Daddy guess what Mommy's thinking and saying too?”

Her innocent question caught Sophia off guard. She froze, unsure how to answer.

Brandon turned his attention to her as well, clearly waiting to hear her response.

“I don’t know,” Sophia finally managed, hedging.

But Theresa was never one to let things drop. She immediately fired another question, eyes bright with curiosity. “Then can

Mommy guess what Daddy's thinking and saying?”

Sophia hesitated, words failing her.

Brandon continued to trace the rim of his glass, head tilted slightly as he watched her, making no move to rescue her from the

spotlight this time.

Brandon's gaze was so intense it made her spine stiffen. Even a simple conversation with Theresa felt awkward under his scrutiny.

When Sophia still didn’t answer, Theresa inched closer, voice a little louder now. “Mommy, you didn’t tellyet.”

Sophia had no choice but to shake her head. “No, sweetie. | can’t guess.”
