"The annual party..." Sophia glanced at her phone screen, eyeing the message Kent had sent her, asking for her help to persuade
Brandon to attend the annual party. She looked over at Brandon, testing the waters. "How about Theresa and | go with you? You
handle your business, and we'll just wander around. When you're done, we can all head back together."
Brandon took a peek at her phone and then looked at her. "Don't worry about Kent's opinion. The real question is whether you want
to go."
Sophia nodded eagerly. "l do want to go."
She added, "Plus, Theresa loves crowded, lively places. It'll be a great experience for her."

her hand, "What's an annual party? | want to go."
Brandon chuckled. "You want to go without even knowing what it is?"
Theresa nodded seriously. "Yup, | want to go with Daddy and Mommy."
Brandon could never say no to Theresa, especially when it was something Sophia was asking for.
He ruffled Theresa's hair and nodded lightly. "Alright, Daddy and Mommy will take you."
"I'll give Susan a call," Sophia said, remembering how Kent had subtly hinted at including Susan last time. It was odd that he hadn't
mentioned it this time.
Brandon nodded. "Okay."
Sophia picked up her phone and called Susan to invite her to the party that night.
"You guys go ahead. | have a client meeting tonight," Susan's voice cthrough the phone, sounding busy yet calm, with the
faint noise of papers shuffling in the background. "Have fun, though."
Sophia couldn't help but frown. She had mentioned it to Susan the other day, and she had agreed without hesitation.
"Why the sudden client meeting?" Sophia asked. "Didn't you say you were free?"
"The client rescheduled for tonight, nothing | can do. We'll hang out another time," Susan replied, sounding a bit resigned. "I really
have to get back to work. Enjoy yourselves!"
With that, Susan hung up.
Sophia listened to the dial tone, her frown deepening.
"What's up?" Brandon looked at her.
"Something feels off with Susan," Sophia couldn't put her finger on it. "She said she can't make it to the party, has a last-minute
client meeting."
