Chapter 4 For a moment, tstood still. Rachel's words hit Alexander like a physical blow, draining the color from his face. The cruel mask he'd been wearing cracked and fell away, replaced by raw shock and something that looked almost like terror. He stared atlying there in the blood stained wreckage of broken glass, his mouth working but no sound coming out.

Finally, he found his voice: "You really are desperate, aren't you, Sarah? Making up such an incredible lie for money?" 1 forced myself to my feet, swaying slightly, and met his contemptuous smile. Of course this was how he saw it. To him, I was just the heartless woman who'd abandoned him when he neededmost. Now that he was rich and powerful, naturally this gold digging ex-wife would say anything, do anything, sacrifice any shred of dignity for cash.

I held his gaze, absorbed his disgust and cold fury. The hollow in my chest where my heart used to be throbbed with phantom pain.

"A heart donation scam?" His laugh was bitter ice. "That's a new low, even for you.

I gently pushed away Rachel's supporting arm. My body felt like it was made of lead, but I forced myself to stand alone.

"Guess you caught me," I said softly, with a ghost of a smile.

The look I gave Rachel stopped her protests. I watched understanding dawn in her eyes, watched her mouth open and close, watched the tears start falling as she realized why I still wouldn't tell him the truth.

"You haven't changed at all," Alexander spat. "Still the sheartless liar.

I just kept that faint smile, saying nothing.

My silence seemed to infuriate him more than any defense could have. Before he could. launch into another tirade, Emily laid a manicured hand on his arm.

Chapter 4 "Darling," she cooed, "she must be truly desperate to make up such a story. Can't we show scompassion?" Alexander's rage cooled to something more calculated. He pulled out his checkbook, wrote with savage strokes, and flung the check at my feet.

"Here. Since drinking supposedly kills you, use this to pre-pay your funeral." I bent down slowly, carefully, to pick up the check. My fingers trembled slightly as I smoothed it out.

"How generous, Mr. Morgan." My voice was barely above a whisper.

When I stumbled, Emily glided over with a show of concern, gripping my arm. Her perfectly manicured nails dug viciously into my flesh.

"Oh, Sarah dear,” she said sweetly, voice dripping with fake sympathy. “Even if you're desperate, you shouldn't go around pretending to be a heart donor." I yanked my arm free, and she tically fell back into Alexander's arms, playing the victim perfectly.

"I was only trying to help..." She dabbed at her eyes, manufacturing tears.

Alexander's face darkened with renewed fury and disappointment. He signaled security, and Rachel and I were escorted out into the bitter night.

Once outside, Rachel finally broke down. "Why won't you just tell him the truth?" she sobbed. "You don't have to endure this abuse!" I just smiled weakly, waving the check. "What's the point of dragging up Besides, look this would have takenmonths to earn." the past now? "How can you joke about this?" Rachel choked out. "After how he humiliated you..." I stayed silent. Seven years ago, when I gave Alexander my heart, it was never about weighing pros and cons or measuring worth. I just wanted him to live. That's all there was to it.

Chapter 4

Maybe it was the weight of those memories, or maybe it was the alcohol finally taking Suddenly stolt om surged up my throat, and the world began to blur. The last thing I heard was Rachel screaming my name,

I woke up in a sterile hospital room, the harsh fluorescent lights-burning my eyes Rachel was clutching my hand, her face tear-stained. "Thank God you're awake," she whispered. "How do you feel?" Before voice, the doctor cin for examination. His expression was grim I could find 1 as he delivered the news:

"Ms. Lane, your body is rejecting the artificial heart. If we can't find want findam compatible donor within three months..." He paused, his voice heavy. "You'll be at serious risk." The silence that followed was deafening. Rachel broke into fresh tears, but I felt strangely calm.

Three months to find a matching heart. We both knew what that meant - I had three months left to live.
