Chapter 79 Linda Miller had always thought she was shrewd enough to sense a betrayal before it cher way, but Karen's treachery caught her off guard.
She gritted her teeth, fuming silently, unable to believe that Karen had dared to betray her. What had that foolish girl been thinking? "Mum," Kris prompted grimly after several seconds of silence. "You haven't answered my question." Immediately, Linda summoned the most pitiful, heartbroken look she could conjure. "Why would I answer such a question? I refuse to believe that my own son would thinksuch a monster as to even consider that I could be behind something like that." Kris pursed his mouth into a tight line. "Mum, I'm not trying to accuse you of anything. I'm just looking for answers here. I know you never liked Thalassa, so I just want you to be honest with me." "I never liked Thalassa? You know that's not true. Yes, in the beginning, I didn't approve of her because I thought she was only trying to take advantage of you, but once I realized how serious you were about her, I changed my mind. Don't you remember everything I did to try and make her feel welcin the family? I was beginning to love her like a daughter until we discovered that she slept with another man the night before your wedding." "Mum, Thalassa never did any such thing. It was-" "How was I supposed to know that? Didn't you see those images yourself? If even you believed that she truly cheated on you, was I supposed to continue loving her? But to go to the extent of accusingof being behind what happened to her... I'm so disappointed in you, Kris. You know what I went through growing up, and I would never want anything similar inflicted on another person, much less a woman." She broke into tears, and seeing how vulnerable she looked, Kris felt a pang of guilt. He knew what his mother had been through. She hadn't been rich before meeting his dad; her life had been hell, filled with abuse from her parents and violence.
Remembering all that, Kris instantly felt guilty. "Mum, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to remind you of your past, nor was I accusing you of anything. I know that Karen was lying, and I told her so to her face. It's just..." He paused, thinking of the best way to word his thoughts without hurting his mother again. "I just want to know if Karen ever told you about her plans or if she ever confessed how she got those pictures.
"Of course not. If she had ever toldwhat she did, do you really think I would've kept it to myself? Yes, I hated Thalassa after we both thought she betrayed and hurt you, but I would never condone such a horrible act as Karen did. Believe me, I'm just as shocked as you are. Thalassa definitely deserves an apology from Karen." "Not just Karen, Mum." Kris sank down onto the desk in the study room, sweeping his hand over his face as frustration, anger, and guilt coiled tightly around him. "We all owe Thalassa an apology for how we treated her when she and I were married, but most of all, I owe her the biggest apology." Linda scrunched her face when Kris wasn't looking. Then she stepped closer to him. "Son, please don't beat yourself up over this. After all, we know that Thalassa never cheated on you like we thought, but what about the other things she did? What about the fact that she betrayed our family and stole millions from us?" Kris stiffened, removing his hand to look back at his mother as he shook his head firmly. “No, Mum. After all the truths I've discovered about her, I believe she didn't steal anything from us." Linda was dismayed, her eyes widening incredulously. "But.. But Kris, you saw everything yourself. You saw all the evidence, had it verified, and it was true, so how can you even say this?" A bitter smile fell on Kris's lips. "Yes, I had it verified, but also verified the pictures Karen gave me, and it turned 1/2 Chapter 79 out she planned it all. So no, Mum, from now on, I'll never believe any other evidence against Thalassa."
