Aurelia had no idea what to do as she confronted the situation with irritation and disbelief. "So, I'm supposed to carry the can while waiting for Mr. Leopold to chome?" Leopold was no stranger to being the fall guy. It was a role he'd played for far too long.
"Sucking it up and taking one for the team. That's something your beloved husband does on the regular. Consider this a bit of marital harmony," he quipped.
Aurelia rolled her eyes at him. "When have you sucked it up? | must have missed the memo." He let out a heavy sigh. "Isn't that what I'm doing right now? Everyone thinks I'm a cad, a playboy like my father." She pulled a face. "Somehow, | feel that's not far from the truth." Leopold's fingers cto rest under her chin, his gaze intense and stern. "The whole world might getwrong, but | can't stand the thought of you misunderstanding me." "I'll be the judge of that," Aurelia said, shoving a piece of pancake into his mouth, her gesture bordering on flirtatious.

His devilishly handsface leaned in close, almost touching hers. "I've been as pure as a knight in shining armor for you. | haven't touched another woman except for you." Aurelia found it hard to believe he could be so disciplined. It was like claiming to be the first man in history to honor all the codes of chivalry.
But every the saw her, he was ravenous, a hunger in his eyes that suggested he hadn't been satisfying his sexual needs elsewhere. If he had been, he wouldn't be so desperate.
"I might trust you a little on that front, but don't letdown," she warned.
Leopold's eyes brightened at her response. The glimmer of hope that she might still trust him, even a little, ignited a spark of excitement within him. "I'd never betray your trust," said Leopold.
After breakfast, Kane headed off to school, and soon after, William arrived.
Although their friendship with Ramona had soured, they kept up the pretense of their tight-knit group. It was all a ruse to throw off potential adversaries to keep them unsuspecting.
Ramona was wracked with guilt, yet she knew Kane and William were far from forgiving.
Rocky hadn't returned to school yet, needing a few more days to recuperate.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmDespite understanding that someone had made Ramona do it, the fact remained she had hurt a friend, and that was something they couldn't easily forgive. They could have worked together to find a solution if she had confided in them earlier.
During recess, Vivian, who had a knack for sensing tension, sidled up to Kane. "I've noticed you and William haven't talked to Ramona for a few days. Did you guys have a falling out?" Kane shrugged nonchalantly. "We haven't fought. We just have run out of things to talk about." "It never used to be like that," Vivian said, making a face.
Kane handed her a mini pancake from his lunchbox. "Do you still like these?" "Yeah," Vivian said, her attention successfully diverted as she bit into the fluffy morsel. "Your mom's pancakes are the best." William jogged over, full of excitement. "My mom made different flavors! There's chocolate, cranberry, and even almond." He grabbed an almond-flavored one as he spoke.
Vivian giggled. "Too bad Rocky's not here. He'd probably devour that whole box in one go." Meanwhile, Ramona lay her head on her desk, pretending to sleep, stealing glances at her classmates through her lashes.
Her heart ached, and tears threatened to spill. She never meant to harm Kane. The plan was to make him slightly unwell with a pinch of something in his clam chowder, just enough to appease those holding her strings.
She had no idea it was a superbug, which could wreak havoc even in tiny amounts.
