| stared at him, my breath catching in my throat. 'Mate?' Of course, he was right. He was still my mate. How
could | forget such a cruel twist of fate? My ill-fated life never ceased to amaze me.
With a sigh, I lifted my hand and gave him a light push to create sdistance between us.
"And my soon-to-be ex-mate," | muttered under my breath.
His eyebrows shot up, surprise flashing across his face. It seemed I'd been catching him off guard a lot lately.
Darkness crept into his eyes, spreading like ink until they were completely consumed, giving him that same
fierce, intimidating look he always wore when he was angry.
| turned my gaze away from him and focused on the road ahead. The car was moving through unfamiliar
territory, and | realized with a sinking feeling that | had no idea where we were. I'd never been to Duskrun River
before-not even when I lived in this pack. My adoptive parents had made sure of that. They were abusive,
controlling, and had keptlocked up in their house like a prisoner.
"Never dare to think that again," Kane murmured darkly beside me.

His low voice madeturn to him, my attention snapping back to the powerful man seated next to me. His cold
eyes were fixed on the back of the driver's seat, as if his glare alone could burn a hole through it.
| frowned. Was he talking to me? Or had the driver done something | hadn't noticed? Kane's tone was too
ambiguous forto tell.
"I know how you feel about me," | said cautiously, studying him.
His body stilled, and for a moment, it was as if my words had frozen him in place. Slowly, he turned his head
toward me, confusion flickering across his otherwise stoic face. His eyes silently questioned me, asking how
much | truly knew.
"I know you hate me," | continued, my voice calm but firm. "And believe me, Kane, our feelings are
mutual."
His brows furrowed, and his jaw clenched at my words. It was clear he didn't like hearingsay that.
| couldn't help scoffing internally. 'This man is so arrogant,’ | thought bitterly. 'After everything he's done to me,
he still expectsto let him monopolize the hate between us? Only he gets to hate me, and I'm supposed to do
nothing? Does he think everything in this world bends to his will? He must be dreaming.’
Kane turned his gaze away from me, his expression hard as stone. "Don't overthink it," he said curtly. "That's not
what | meant when | said | needed to talk."
| rolled my eyes, tired of this endless game. "Then talk already!" | snapped, my frustration boiling over. "I'm
waiting, Alpha. What exactly are you holding back for?"
He nodded slightly and locked his gaze with mine. His piercing eyes dug into me, makingfeel as though he
could see straight into my soul.
"You seem to enjoy your job quite a bit," he said suddenly.
The unexpected comment threwoff. | blinked at him, confused. What? ***) 09:46

"Yes," | replied cautiously. "I do enjoy it. Why?"

| couldn't even begin to understand what his problem was. Where had that cfrom? Did he really dragall
the way out here just to criticize my job?
| clenched my fists, biting my tongue to stop myself from snapping at him. 'What does this man want from me
now?' | thought angrily. 'Does he wantto lose this job, too? He and his cursed presence won't ever letbe
happy.
The car fell into an uncomfortable silence. | kept my eyes on the road ahead, refusing to look at him, and Kane
didn't say another word.
After about half an hour, the car finally cto a stop. | glanced around and realized we were parked on a large,
empty bridge that stretched across the river. The area was completely deserted.
Turning back to Kane, | asked, "We're here now, Alpha. So tellwhat exactly did you want to talk about?"
He didn't answer right away. Instead, he stared at me, his expression conflicted. For the first tin my life, |
saw uncertainty in him. Kane Thorne, the man who was always so sure of himself, looked...
lost.
When he finally spoke, his words hitlike a lightning bolt.
"Selene," he said, his voice quiet but steady, "I found out the truth. You weren't the one who druggedthat
night."
