Chapter 143

Harvey didn't give two hoots about behaving in front of the elders.

Eloise was really pissed off! She slowly got up and nodded to Pauline, "Pauline, | got things to do, gotta run."

Pauline looked like she was hit by a bus. What's the deal with her son's love life?

Wasn't he supposed to be wooing the girl? Why were they fighting the minute they met? He's never been like

this!

Pauline muttered, "Harvey, why don't you walk Eloise out?"

Eloise cracked a smile, "I drove myself here."

Harvey didn't insist. He put down his cup, a touch of aloofness in his demeanour, "There's a short meeting at the

office tomorrow about the Angus Laurent case. I'll give you a heads up!"

"Is the person involved in the case attending, or?"

Eloise didn't want her father to attend for fear of upsetting him. So even though she knew Harvey had other

intentions, she had to accept it.

That's exactly what Harvey wanted.

He replied nonchalantly, "I'll be waiting at the office for you."

Eloise dashed off.

As soon as Eloise left, Pauline started nagging, "Harvey, this ain't right! Who chases a girl like this, asking her out

at the office?"

Harvey simply smiled. He wouldn't tell his mother about the difficulties he encountered while pursuing Eloise.

He got up gracefully, "I'll walk you home."

His good looks and aristocratic demeanour must have caught the eyes of many young girls.

Pauline felt both proud and sad.

"Harvey, with all the goods you got, how cyou're still single!"

Orlena pouted, "He brought it upon himself, didn't he!"

Eloise arrived at Harvey's office at two o'clock the following afternoon.

Denise personally greeted her.

"Attorney Horigan is in an international video conference, Eloise. Hang tight for a bit."

She led Eloise into Harvey's private meeting room, personally brewed a cup of coffee, and left after serving it.

Eloise sipped her coffee and admired the decor.

Harvey had a thing for postmodern art, and this meeting room was tastefully decorated. Suddenly, Eloise's gaze

landed on a vintage bronze piece because it was upside down.

She found it odd, picked it up and examined it.

But she regretted it as soon as she turned it over. It was actually a photo frame,

with a picture Eloise recognized: 24-year-old Harvey and 22-year-old Joan.

Eloise silently looked at it for a few seconds, then put the frback in its original place.

There was a sound at the door.

"It was placed there during the renovation, and I'd forgotten to throw it out."

Eloise turned around.

Harvey was standing at the entrance of the meeting room, dressed in a classic black and white suit, mature and

handsome.

He cover, picked up the frame, and looked at Eloise, his voice gentle.

"Are you upset?"

Eloise dodged the topic, "Attorney Horigan,

for my dad."

"I know, no need to emphasize." Harvey tossed the frinto the trash can, sat

on the couch, and opened a file, "Ms. Laurent, let's get started!"

Eloise was taken aback.

He clearly said they were having a meeting last night. Why were there only the two of them.

Harvey's gaze was deep. "Do you doubt my professional capabilities?"

Dare Eloise?

She braced herself and listened to him explain those professional terms and analyze the case.

She tried her best, but in the end, she couldn't help but feel sleepy.

"Ms. Laurent." Harvey looked serious, "Do you want to sleep?" He casually asked,

"I saw you sleeping soundly on the sofa last night."

Eloise was speechless. She toughed it out until six and thought it should be about time. Harvey should be

knocking off.

Sure enough, Harvey closed the file and said nonchalantly, "It's getting late. I'll treat Ms. Laurent to a meal."

Eloise calmly declined.

"I have sdetails to discuss with you, and we can talk while having dinner." Harvey looked at her, waiting for

her answer.

Eloise couldn't really say no. As long as he didn't go overboard, she was willing to give in to her father's case.

But just as she was about to agree, a voice called out from the doorway, "Harvey."

Eloise looked up. It was Joan.

Joan was holding a file, looking all spruced up, ready to discuss business.

Eloise admired her effort.

Joan already had a fiance, and there were stroubles there, but Joan could still chase after a man like this.

She was full of energy.

Joan was indeed prepared, and she said in a soft voice, "Harvey, | cto talk to you about my case. Am |

disturbing you?"

Eloise seized the opportunity to stand up, "Attorney Horigan, you guys go ahead." She barely moved when

Harvey held her tight.

He stared at her.

After a while, he said quietly, "My forehead wound hasn't healed yet, Eloise. Aren't you going to take care of

me?"

He asked Eloise to wait for him in the meeting room and took Joan to his office. Harvey walked ahead, and Joan

followed.

Suddenly, her gaze froze.

Joan saw the photo frin the trash can, and it was their sweetest photo, thrown into the trash can.

Joan looked at Eloise, "Did you throw it?"

Eloise didn't answer directly, "I don't destroy other people's things."

Joan turned pale. So it was Harvey who threw it?

How could he? Why would he throw away their memories?

Joan's lips trembled. She didn't want to accept this outcome. She stared at Eloise,

"Ms. Laurent, do you think you can get Harvey this way?."

"I'm not interested in your past. Ms. Joan, if you can't forget and love it very much, cherish it well. Otherwise

your past might disappear before you know it."

Eloise was pragmatic.

Maybe she still had a problem with Joan being around, but she and Harvey were through. There was no point in

arguing over Joan anymore.

She grabbed her bag and files and walked out.

Eloise got into her car, about to start the engine, when the car door was yanked open.

Harvey stood outside. He looked at her, calmly asking, "Are you jealous and angry?"

"No."

Harvey's gaze deepened, and after a moment, he asked, "What can | do to make you be with me, or is

everything | do useless now?"

"Yes, everything you do is useless."

Harvey suddenly laughed. He said, "I've handed over Joan's case to another lawyer. | won't have any work-

related interactions with her in the future. Eloise, whatever was between Joan and I is in the past now."

Eloise just stared straight ahead.

With a stoic expression, she said, "Harvey, you will never understand how I felt that night on the operating table!

More than the pain, | felt humiliated!" She turned her gaze to him, "I'm scared now, and | can't love again!" After

these words, there was a glimmer of tears in Eloise's eyes. She gently stepped on the gas pedal and left Harvey

behind. The issue between them wasn't Joan. It was him, Harvey.

Harvey didn't love her, that's why that night happened. If she, Eloise, was someone he deeply loved, how could

he bear to leave her? Eloise once loved Max Velona deeply, only to be left scarred and bruised! As for her

feelings for Harvey, she chose to protect herself.
