Winnie thought Lisanne’s words made sense as well. She looked at Xavier and said, “Let’s listen to
Lisanne’s advice. To be honest, I think the best time to do so is when we bring Christopher back home.”
“You’re right.” Xavier nodded with a frown on his face.
Right then, Lisanne—who was sitting across from Winnie and Xavier—got up abruptly and looked in
the direction behind Winnie and Xavier nervously.
Winnie turned around subconsciously and looked behind her. Xavier also followed suit and turned
around.
Then, they saw a married couple in their fifties who were supporting each other while standing around
two meters away from Winnie and the rest.
At that moment, Lisanne spoke. “Mr. Bennett, Mdm. Sullivan, didn’t you already go upstairs? Why did
you come back?”
It seemed like the old couple didn’t hear Lisanne’s question at all. They simply strode toward Lisanne
and the rest anxiously.
Then, they walked directly to Xavier.
Xavier got to his feet to show them his respect.
Seeing Xavier, who was a complete stranger, standing in front of him, Christopher’s father clenched his
wife’s hand and asked in a trembling voice, “Sir, we’re here to get something from Lisanne and
overheard you saying you want to apologize to us. We even heard Lisanne saying that she worries we
can’t handle the truth of what happened to Christopher. Can you tell me what exactly is going on?”
Xavier stood before the old couple and lowered his head.
He knew there was no way for him to delay this matter any further. Thus, he said guiltily, “Professor
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtBennett, Professor Sullivan, I’m sorry. I’m actually responsible for Captain Bennett’s sacrifice as well.
I’m not asking for your forgiveness today. All I want is to reduce the pain you’re suffering from the loss.”
Previously, Xavier had already checked Christopher’s family background and found out his parents
were both university professors. Therefore, he addressed them as such.
However, Xavier’s statement was too ambiguous, so Christopher’s parents didn’t understand what was
going on at all.
Tears streamed down Madeline’s cheeks instantly. “What exactly is going on? What happened back
then? Please tell us everything, will you? We need to know the truth.”
“Okay, I’ll explain everything that happened.” Xavier helped the old couple who had lost their son
recently to sit down before kneeling in front of them.
“Xavier…” Winnie lowered her eyes and glanced at Xavier before kneeling beside him. “Let me explain
it instead.”
“It’s all right. I was the one who did it, so I won’t let you take responsibility on my behalf.”
“No, it’s something we went through together. Besides, we’re a married couple. It’s only natural for us
to shoulder it together.”
Seeing how Winnie was kneeling with him and atoning for his sins alongside him, Xavier felt warmth
and pain blossoming in his heart. After staring at his beloved woman for a while, he quickly retracted
his gaze.
After that, he began to share the story of what happened back then in Manchernius with the professors.
While he was explaining the entire situation, he didn’t spare any details and had no intention of dodging
the responsibility.
Being Christopher’s mother, Madeline broke down into silent sobs after listening to the events that her
son had experienced.
“Oh, my son! My beloved Christopher! Why are you so unfortunate?” Madeline wept in agony. When
she saw Xavier kneeling before her, she couldn’t help but reach her hands out to hit him, although she
had tried her best to resist the urge.
She wailed, “Why didn’t you control yourself? Why can’t you just resist it? If you didn’t start a fight with
him and push him, at least he’d still be alive, even if he would be limping or paralyzed. Why? Why must
such a good man suffer such an ill fate?”
Although Madeline’s punches weren’t heavy, they weren’t too soft, either.
Xavier merely stood there and took the blows without avoiding them at all.
Blake wiped his tears and reached his arms out to stop his wife from hitting Xavier. “Stop hitting him.
This young man has his reasons as well. He only did what he did because he was set up. Our son is
already gone. We can’t hurt someone else’s son as well.”
“I know that.” Madeline bawled. “But I miss our son, Blake. I really do.”
Seeing the pair of parents who had just lost their only child, everyone at the scene teared up.
Madeline’s cries were getting increasingly sorrowful. In the end, she pressed her palms against her
chest and collapsed on the couch.
Instantly, Blake got up in a state of shock. “Hurry and get the medicine, Lisanne! It’s in Madeline’s
handbag! Get the bag here quickly!”
“All right!” Lisanne immediately understood the reason why Blake and Madeline suddenly returned—
they came back to take this handbag.
Lisanne handed the bottle of medicine in the handbag to Blake at once.
Yet, Madeline was too agitated presently, and the medicine didn’t work as effectively as it used to.
Seeing this, Xavier carried Madeline to the car and drove her to the hospital immediately.

didn’t have much comment on Xavier.
Xavier and Winnie wanted to compensate Christopher’s family. However, Blake subtly explained he
didn’t wish to have any further interactions with them.
Winnie and Xavier respected Blake’s decision. After confirming that Madeline’s health wasn’t in critical
danger, they got ready to leave the hospital.
Seeing that, Lisanne escorted them to the elevator.
She then said, “Winnie, I also didn’t know Mdm. Sullivan had heart disease before today, as she had
never mentioned it. I’m partially responsible for causing her illness to act up as well. So don’t feel too
bad about it. Moreover, you should try letting it go since Mr. Bennett had also expressed his wish to
stop reminiscing about the sad past. Although Christopher is gone, we’ll never forget him.”
Lisanne continued, “We must start returning to our normal lives, and you cannot spend the rest of your
life living with such guilt, too. That being said, you must keep looking for Greta, Winnie. We must bring
Christopher’s body back.”
“Don’t worry,” Xavier solemnly reassured Lisanne before Winnie said anything. “I will do my best to find
Greta’s whereabouts and Christopher’s body, even if it takes my whole life to find them. Also, I will take
care of Professor Bennett and Professor Sullivan in the future.”
“Good.” Lisanne nodded lightly. “Winnie isn’t wrong about you at all. You’re a responsible man.”
Shortly after, Winnie and Xavier left the hospital.
In the car, Xavier asked Winnie, “I heard from Josiah that you saw someone who looked like Greta. Is
he looking into the matter now?”
Winnie replied, “I was busy handling Granny’s matter at that time. Besides, the matter can only proceed
if we check the patient’s family. Thus, I entrusted Josiah to deal with this.”
“I see.” While driving, Xavier phoned Josiah and told Winnie, “You can leave it to me now.”
