A driver was already inside. After the man climbed in, he ordered, "Start the car now!" The driver started the engine and made a sharp turn, the van quickly disappearing into the quiet emptiness. Dalores collapsed into the seat, her strength drained. Her eyes appeared dim, and even the neon lights filtering through the windows did little to brighten them.
The van sped along, with a Benz SUV trailing steadily behind. The partially open window allowed the cold wind to whip through, frosting Julio's face as he followed at a distance.
Leaving the city, the van entered less crowded areas. It soon approached a vast plain, where temporary houses of various sizes stood. One had been rented in advance.
After exiting the vehicle, the man carried Dalores inside the house. The driver quickly parked and hurried to follow him.
