Chapter 1648:
The next morning, Nina made a beeline for Damian as soon as she woke up. Since it was their last day, she
stayed with Damian the whole time, her eyes filled with reluctant sadness.
“Damian, I'm going back to Alerith tomorrow morning,” Nina said softly, her voice gentle and clear. “Could you
smile forbefore | go? | haven't seen you smile once.”
Damian's hands twitched slightly at his sides. He wanted to speak, but the words caught in his throat.
“Not even once?” Nina asked again, confused.
Damian stayed silent.
Nina leaned forward, resting her chin on her hands as she faced him. “Do you not like playing with me?”
She sounded hurt, starting to believe he didn’t enjoy her company.
Damian began to speak, but Nina kept talking.
“Maybe it’s me. Maybe | just haven't figured out the right way to make you happy,” Nina reasoned, blaming

“Who's Nick?” Damian asked softly.
“He’s my mom's friend's neighbor,” Nina replied without hesitation, her voice bright. “He’s super funny!”
As she smiled and spoke so animatedly, Damian felt the courage to speak drain away. She had no shortage of
friends...
“Damian,” Nina called his nagain, gently.
Damian pressed his lips together, a gloomy look crossing his face. “Yes.”
“You should try to be happier!” Nina told him, her voice sincere. “You always look so down.”

“You should go pack your things,” Damian said flatly, avoiding her gaze. “I have homework to do.”
“Can’t you play witha little longer?” Nina asked, unwilling to let go.
“I can’t,” Damian replied coldly.
“It’s our last day together,” Nina said, trying to cheer him up. “Tomorrow, when you wake up, the lovely and
sweet Nina will be gone.”
“I'm heading back,” Damian said as he stood and turned away.
“Damian!” Nina called after him. But he didn’t stop or turn around.
Nina puffed her cheeks in frustration, watching him disappear. Then she turned and trudged back in a grumpy
huff.
Seeing her stomp in, Jesse glanced up from his book and asked, “Who got on your nerves?”
“No one,” Nina mumbled, clearly still fuming but unwilling to blDamian. She kept finding excuses for him.
Maybe he was upset about her leaving. Maybe his homework really was important.
“Why aren’t you playing with Damian?” Jesse asked, already suspecting the truth.
“He’s busy,” Nina answered sullenly.
“I see.”
Jesse went quiet again. Did Jesse not care about her anymore? She waited a bit, then couldn't hold back
anymore. “Jesse.”
