Chapter 1642:
“Why not?” Jesse pressed.
“Too much hassle,” Kristian said with a low chuckle.
Jesse let it go, knowing Kristian’s answers were never the full story, no matter how many questions he asked.
After wishing Kristian a good night, Jesse started up the stairs.
Kristian watched the boy’s small figure climb, then called out, “Hold on a sec.” Jesse paused and turned, curious.
“Do you not like the big rides at the amusement park?” Kristian asked, his sharp gaze studying Jesse's face for
any hint of truth.
Jesse froze, caught off guard by the question.
“If they're not your thing, don’t push yourself,” Kristian said, noticing the flicker in Jesse’s expression. “It’s not a
big deal to share your fears with others.”
“There are lots of things we don't like in life, but we can’t always skip them,” Jesse said, his soft voice steady.
Kristian didn’t let up. “Sure, but you're a kid. It's fine to steer clear of stuff that scares you.”

Kristian frowned, second-guessing himself. Was he mistaken?
“I just find them boring, that’s all,” Jesse said, guarding his fears tightly.
“Nothing else to it.”
“Really?” Kristian tested, raising an eyebrow.
Jesse met his gaze, silent.
Kristian tried one last tto catch him off guard. “Then why were your hands so sweaty on the armrests?”

“Your eyes must be playing tricks,” Jesse shot back smoothly. Even when he was nervous or scared on the rides,
he always watched his surroundings, keeping his mind busy to hide his fear. He was sure Kristian was just poking
at him.
“Get to bed,” Kristian said, dropping the topic when Jesse wouldn't budge. “Good night.”
Jesse nodded, heading upstairs with a swirl of mixed feelings—part anxious, part relieved, but determined to
keep his guard up.
Jesse couldn't figure out how Kristian had noticed his fear of those rides. Fortunately, he had prepared himself
mentally the moment Kristian mentioned it, so he didn’t give himself away.
For a while afterward, Jesse didn’t join in when Nina and Damian played. Each day, Nina eagerly pulled Kristian
and Damian outside for fun, while Jesse stayed behind and kept himself occupied.
To his surprise, Nina and Damian seemed perfectly happy without him. During that time, Nina chevery
day looking cheerful, although a little tired, clearly content.
Soon, Christmas was approaching.
After dinner, Nina seemed a little downcast.
Both Kristian and Jesse noticed it. Jesse was the first to speak. “What's wrong?”
“Can we cback here after we go hfor Christmas?” Nina's usual bright smile was missing, replaced by a
flicker of worry in her eyes.
Jesse frowned slightly, lost in thought.
