| knew my tin Germany wouldn't be long, but | hadn't expected it to be this brief
David kept confirming “The timing is perfect now. We have contacts in the States, and most importantly, we've
received FDA approval Who knows when the next opportunity will come?”
I nodded: “Then let's return.*
David's company was registered in New York, where we landed at JFK.
With our existing product foundation and major capital injection, everything progressed rapidly.
The faster we moved, the more people we needed.

Then David toldthe investor wanted a meeting
“He specifically asked to see you. Strange.”
| should have realized sooner. The investor David frequently mentioned six months ago was unusually agreeable,
never questioning any company decisions.
| fidgeted with my pen cap, hesitating: “Could | skip this?”
David grimaced: “I could make excuses with anyone else, but not him.”
| hadn’t imagined how | would meet Alex Drake again.
As his friend had said, without deliberate orchestration, we were like opposite ends of a revolving door, destined
never to cross paths.
“Emma, this is Mr. Drake.”
“Mr. Drake, this is Emma Walker, our technical lead. Her joining a year ago accelerated our progress
significantly.”
The Alex beforebore no resemblance to his former self, as if that perfectly tailored suit had severed him from
the past.
Still casual, still nonchalant, but completely different.
Now his casualness carried an untouchable air, keeping people at bay.
Chapter 12
Only his gaze remained the s- forceful and direct. | extended my hand with a polite smile. “Pleased to meet
you, Mr. Drake. I'm Emma Walker.”

Alex kept his hands in his pockets, silent, his sharp gaze examining me.
Without pretense: “Mr. Matthews, | need a word with her.”
David opened his mouth, then quietly withdrew.
As he opened the door, he met two pairs of eyes. Harrison shooed him away.
Another curious voice asked: “What's this about?”
Harrison responded concisely: “Since Alex couldn't travel abroad, he found a way to bring her back.”
“Any chance?”
“None. Even if she were flayed alive, she wouldn't pass Lady Catherine's standards.”
“Before, his mother didn’t care, thought she was insignificant. Now she’s declared - unmarried is fine, but no
unsuitable marriage.”
