Chapter 10

The flight was boarding, flight attendants greeting each passenger with sweet voices.

I'd blocked Alex on every platform, locking our past in that small apartment.

Maybe he'd discovered it by now, or maybe he was busy with guests, only remembering to deal with outside

matters after the ceremony.

Without incident, the plane took off as scheduled.

As the wings disappeared into the clouds, the engine’s roar drowned out everything else.

Unwritten stories, judgmental gazes-all lifted high, then gently set aside.

Before takeoff, Victoria called, filled with righteous anger.

“Why are you running? He deceived you! Even if you won't fight back, why turn off your phone and flee abroad?

You're not the one who did wrong!*

“If I were you, | wouldn't care if he’s Mr. Drake or Mr. Whoever - I'd crash my car right into his engagement party.

Nobody deserves to be happy!*

“At least make a scene! With his family background, even the smallest settlement would set your family up for

three generations. It's money! Forget love-are you stupid to refuse money?!”

I'd always thought she hated me. I'd expected her to gloat upon learning I'd been deceived for five years.

“Thank you, Victoria.” My voice was soft but firm. “Despite everything that happened, | don’t want to deny those

five years. They were years | gave my whole heart to. | don’t want them to end in ugliness.”

Victoria fell silent. She understood better than anyone-sometimes the issue isn’t about not wanting to make a

scene, but that making one would be meaningless.

Everyone knew about this, yet no one cared.

What would making a scene achieve? They'd already watched this comedy for so long-why give them one final

act to sigh over?

There, even though everyone knew | was wronged, no one would fight for my justice, no one would take my side.

Moreover, with a family like that, small disturbances might amuse them, but truly damaging their reputation

would have consequences someone ordinary likecouldn't bear.
