Chapter 202 His confession

Howard was about to pick Renee up off the floor, an arm blocked him. “Howard, you're not the right person for

this,” Marcelo said to him.

Those words left Howard frozen.

Howard understood that Marcelo was asserting his position as Renee’s husband to him.

While Howard was at a loss for words, Marcelo already lifted Renee in his arms and exited the classroom.

As he held her, Marcelo immediately noticed her fever was unusually high.

He walked forward, taking big steps and moving fast, carrying her effortlessly despite her being an adult.

“Renee!” Susanna chased after them.

But by the tshe made it downstairs, Marcelo had already placed Renee in the car.

Daniel emerged from the break room when he heard the noise, and upon spotting Marcelo carrying

Renee into a car,

he found himself strangely irritated.

“Why do you look so upset?” Susanna caught Daniel's dissatisfied look. “They're married, after all!” Despite

knowing about Renee and Marcelo’s relationship, Daniel had never paid much attention to it. Yet, seeing Marcelo

and Renee so close together now...

What made it so annoying?

He heard about Renee's age.

Was it because she and Marcelo had a big age gap?

He found Renee too young to be with Marcelo.

“Daniel, do you have any idea where Mr. King might be taking Renee?” Susanna looked at Daniel, clearly worried.

She was concerned for Renee and hoped Daniel could help ensure she was okay.

Back in the classroom, Howard observed Renee being taken away, staring at his empty hands, sensing an

emptiness within.

“Howard, was that the sattractive guy we saw with Renee in the library yesterday?” one of the students

asked Howard.

“Yes, that was him.”

“He sure is good-looking. But why did you let him take Renee away? Aren't you into her? You should

chase after them!”

Howard gave a bitter laugh. “She’s out of my league.”

“What do you mean out of your league? You've got looks, a great body, a solid family, and talent to boot. What's

missing?”

“The guy she’s with isn’t lacking in any of those areas either.”

In fact, Marcelo was even more impressive.

Howard sighed.

Marcelo had a point. Once he graduated, Howard doubted he would even be in the running to approach

Marcelo on equal terms!

Howard's roommate shook his head.

“Shouldn’t you at least tell her how you feel? Are you okay with the fact that she will never be aware of your

feelings?”

Of course not!

If he was okay with it, he wouldn’t have rushed back from Angland to begin with.

Just as Howard was gearing up to go after them, his phone rang. It was his father.

“Howard, our family is entering a big deal with KM Group, and they've asked specifically for you to be the project

lawyer. You need to chright away.”

Howard's hand shook as he held the phone.

KM Group...

That was Marcelo’s company!

This was his way of getting Howard away from Renee.

It was also a clear message from Marcelo that Howard was no match for him.

At the hospital;

“The patient's got a bit of a fever and low blood sugar, nothing to worry about,” the doctor announced as he

wrapped up Renee's file.

“But why would she have a fever?” Marcelo frowned, puzzled.

The weather had been mild, without a hint of chill or rain.

During their intimate moments yesterday, he had made sure Renee wasn't cold.

Catching sight of the marks on Renee’s neck, the doctor gave Marcelo a look with a meaningful

expression.

He explained, “You should avoid engaging in excessively prolonged sexual activity. We see quite a few cases of

fever after intense sexual activities. Young folks ought to be aware of their limits!”

Pausing for a moment, Marcelo nodded. “Understood.”

Renee looked particularly vulnerable on the hospital bed. Her skin was pale, and an IV needle was inserted into

her left hand.

Marcelo, seeing her in such a state, immediately felt a pang of regret for his actions the previous day.

He took a seat next to her, carefully pushing a strand of hair from her face, his touch gentle, betraying a softness

he didn't realize was there.

As Renee caround, her last clear memory was of the simple design of a men’s wedding ring. That ring

belonged to Marcelo.

Slowly, her eyes fluttered open, the sharp scent of hospital cleaners wrinkling her nose.

She immediately met Marcelo’s gaze.

Marcelo was just about to inquire if Renee was feeling unwell in any way when she spoke up.

“Did you chere with the divorce papers?” she inquired. lliness left her with a raspy voice. That was

something Marcelo had momentarily forgotten.

“The papers aren't ready yet,” he responded, his voice tight.

Because the lawyer hadn't even been notified to prepare them.

Renee couldn't help but think that if things were moving this slowly, maybe it was tfor him to look for a new

lawyer.

“Before | passed out, | saw you,” She said. “If you're not with divorce papers, why were you there?”

She had assumed Marcelo left.

But the truth was, he had switched his car and followed her. From the hotel to her dorm, and then to her

classroom this morning.

The way he behaved made him seem like a dreadful stalker.

Marcelo, however, didn’t reply to her question. Instead, he got visibly upset by the memory.

“Renee, do you even know how to take care of yourself? Don’t you know to go to the hospital when you're

feeling sick? Can't you sense it when you've got a high fever? Do you want to harm yourself?”

“It’s not your concern!” Renee shot back, her eyes flashing with anger.

How dare he!

“Who will look after you if | don’t?” Marcelo let out a mocking laugh.

He leaned in close, his tone harsh and possessive. “Mrs. King, the only person responsible for you now is

me.”

Not Howard!

He had arranged a project for Howard to keep him busy, ensuring that Howard wouldn't have tto approach

Renee for a while.

“Leavealone!” Renee hissed.

At that moment, Daniel, who had cwith Susanna to visit, walked in. He was just in tto witness Renee

trying to shove Marcelo away. The sight of the IV needle causing her discomfort made his expression turn dark

instantly.

The nurse, readjusting Renee's IV needle, bit back her urge to lecture both the obstinate patient and the

uncooperative family member, aware of their VIP status in the hospital.

Inside the room, Susanna kept Renee company, their conversation light and amiable. Outside, Daniel

represented his family in a cordial exchange with Marcelo.

“I should have paid my respects to the King family upon my return, but I've been preoccupied,” he said to

Marcelo.

Marcelo, ever diplomatic, replied, “You're too kind, Mr. Lambert.”

He silently noted the irony in Daniel's claim of being busy, knowing his schedule was filled with exchange

student duties alongside Susanna.

He chose not to call out the inconsistency, his attention drifting to the figure visible through the door’s slight

opening.

The ties between the King and Lambert families extended back generations, with only his brother and Daniel's

elder brother maintaining that bond in the current era.

“Mrs. King isn’t really a Hudson, is she?” Daniel mused aloud, not expecting an answer. “It explains why

your wife's family did not cto confront you about the rumors between you and Vivian.”

Despite learning of Renee’s unrelated lineage to their own, Daniel couldn't help but feel a growing sympathy for

her.

Marcelo, taken aback, admitted, “I thought you'd advocate for Vivian.”

Daniel offered a casual shrug. “Your brother was more invested in Vivian's well-being than us, insisting

on your lifelong commitment to her happiness in his final moments.”

His words, true as they were, carried an undertone of disapproval.

Marcelo couldn't discern if the disapproval was meant for him or for his late brother, who could no longer

answer such grievances.

Before meeting Renee, Susanna was merely a fervent fan girl.

Now, her admiration had shifted entirely to Renee, a scholar both talented and beautiful.

Throughout the afternoon, Susanna devoted herself to Renee’s comfort, fetching water and peeling fruit, until

finally, Daniel escorted her away.

Renee's left hand, swollen from the IV's blood backflow, prompted Marcelo to ask a nurse for an ice pack.

He clumsily wrapped it in a towel, applying a cold compress under the nurse’s guidance.

“Let the nurse handle it,” Renee protested, reluctant for his touch.

Marcelo, however, seemed deaf to her request.

Now in a black shirt, he gently cradled her delicate wrist in his hand, his fingers long and veined, hinting at an

underlying strength.

The nurse discreetly looked away from the intimate scene.

The cold mist escaped the towel as Marcelo diligently administered the compress, treating it with almost

reverential care.

Renee's grip on the bedsheet tightened.

There was a twhen such tenderness from him would have brought her joy, but now it only deepened

her sorrow.

She recognized his care was not born of love, but obligation, she was merely the “perfect Mrs. King” to be

showcased.

Despite this realization, Renee couldn't help but find ssolace in his attentiveness, though it wasn’t

the love she yearned for.

I'm hungry,” she suddenly declared.

“What would you like?” Marcelo asked, his patience evident.

“There's a porridge shop at the entrance of our school’s snack street. They sell mushroom chicken strip

porridge.”

Marcelo nodded. “I'll have someone get it for you.”

“No, | want you to go get it,” Renee insisted, locking eyes with him.

Their gaze met briefly, and Marcelo understood.

She wanted him away.

She couldn't bear his presence.

After a pause, he rose. “Just the mushroom chicken strip porridge? Anything else?”

“That's all,” She replied, her voice firm.

Because she knew well that the shop no longer sold that dish.

As Marcelo passed the ice pack to the nurse, he instructed her to continue applying the cold compress to

Renee's hand.

He wasn’t worried about Renee leaving the hospital without his knowledge. Her attempt at voluntary discharge

would be denied by this private hospital without his consent.

“Your husband really cares about you.” After Marcelo’s departure, the nurse leaned in, whispering to Renee, “He

seems a bit cold, but his actions say otherwise.”

“Really?” Renee's response was noncommittal.

The nurse nodded earnestly. “When he brought you here, he was so serious, yet he carried you so carefully, like

you were very precious to him. It's clear he’s deeply concerned about you.”

The attending doctor initially suspected a severe illness, considering ICU admission, but ultimately discovered it

was merely a fever!

Renee found these details hard to believe because she was in an unconscious state and unaware of what was

happening when she was admitted. She listened, but her thoughts were elsewhere.

“Your husband kept asking the doctor for details about your condition. He was very attentive, even though it was

just a fever. Isn’t that funny?” the nurse continued.

“Yeah,” Renee murmured absentmindedly, her mind drifting to Marcelo’s special treatment of Vivian and

his reluctance to grant her a divorce. Yet, he had acquiesced to her simple request for porridge.

The irony wasn't lost on her.

“No need for that ice pack, thank you,” Renee said, pulling back her hand.

She preferred the comfort of cold milk tea over the chill of the ice pack.

Left alone with her thoughts, Renee was soon interrupted by the nurse. “Miss Hudson, you have a visitor.”

Surprised, Renee looked up to see Howard, dressed formally, a stark contrast to his usual casual attire.

“Howard, what brings you here? And all dressed up like this?” Renee couldn’t hide her astonishment.

Howard, in his suit and shoes, his hair neatly combed back, looked slightly uncomfortable.

“My family set up a job opportunity for me...Do I look odd?” He was clearly out of breath, suggesting he had

hurried to see her.

“Not strange at all, you look great!” Renee offered an encouraging thumbs up.

“I was in the area and thought to check on you,” explained Howard, who had taken the opportunity to chere

during his lunch break in spite of his hectic schedule.

Renee expressed her gratitude. “You really didn’t have to, especially with your schedule. I'm much better now

and should be leaving the hospital tomorrow.”

“I needed to see you were alright. | wouldn't have been able to relax otherwise.”

Howard's earnest reply caught her slightly off guard.

“You...” Renee sensed what was coming.

Howard, with a deep breath and a resolute gaze, confessed, “I like you, Renee. | have feelings for you. So | had

to cand see you were alright.”

His confession didn’t surprise Renee.
