Yvan didn't stick around either. He headed straight back to the banquet hall.

Madison and I exchanged a glance, both of us trying to figure out what just happened. "What was that about?" Madison asked, furrowing her brow. "What's Yvan up to?" "Probably something sketchy," I muttered. "Looks like Yvan's definitely planning something big. Do you think it's tied to Murphy?" "Could be." Madison nodded. "Those two already have shistory. They might be working together." We were still talking when we heard a muffled crash echo further down the alley, followed by a woman's scream. "Help!" It was a bloodcurdling shriek that made my skin crawl.

Madison and I jumped, then turned to see where it cfrom. In the dim light, we spotted someone lying on the ground, completely still. Standing over the body was a masked figure holding a weapon.

"Oh my God!" I gasped, instinctively taking a step back. "Is t-that a person?" Madison covered her mouth with her hand, her voice trembling. "N-No way. Did that person just get..." We barely had a moment to take in what we'd seen before the masked figure seemed to notice us. He snapped his head up, looking straight at us.

My heart lurched, and I whipped around, pulling Madison withas we bolted. Footsteps pounded behind us. He was chasing us with his knife in hand.

"Run!" I yelled, tearing down the alley as fast as I could.

Madison was right on my heels, breathing heavily.

"Who is that guy? Did he just kill someone? We need to call the police!" she gasped, horrified.

My heart was racing, and I shook my head wildly. "Don't even think about it! You want to end up back in prison, you idiot? We need to lose this freak first!" We ran for our lives, darting through tight alleys, twisting and turning until we hit a high wall. We were cornered.

"What do we do? We're screwed!" Madison cried, despair rising in her voice.

I glanced back and saw the masked figure closing in. I gritted my teeth and said, "You climb over first. I'll stall him!" I turned to face the masked figure, getting into a defensive stance. To my surprise, he froze.

When I took a step back, he moved closer. But as soon as I lunged, he pulled back. It felt like he was holding back on something.

I charged forward, landing a solid kick right between his legs. He flinched, and the knife dropped from his hand, hitting the ground.

I seized the chance and kicked him in the face, sending him crashing to the floor.

"Evelyn, hurry!" Madison shouted from the other side of the wall.

I quickly climbed over the wall and joined her. Then, we took off running until we burst onto a busy street.

"There's a hotel up ahead. Let's hide in there for a bit!" I pointed to the neon sign, trying to catch my breath.

Madison nodded, and we rushed into the lobby, still out of breath and shaken.

"What in the world just happened?" Madison leaned against the wall, her face pale as a sheet. "Who the bell kills someone in a back alley in the middle of the night?"

I shook my head, my heart still pounding "No idea. Do you think Yvan's involved? He was acting sheaky just now, and definitely just m seemed like he had something bad in mind."

"Maybe it's a gang fight? Haven't there been rumors • about turf wars heating updately? It could be linked," Madison suggested. "Whatever it is, we need to call the police." I pulled out my phone and dialed 911.

The dispatcher said they'd send someone right away and told us to stay where we were.
