Hudson hurriedly brought Leon to the drying ground. Because it was winter, the fish didn’t spoil easily, and many
were laid out to dry-but the vast site was empty; Aubrey had clearly driven everyone off.
Arriving and finding no sign of Aubrey, Hudson panicked and called her.
“Where are you?!” he demanded.
He hadn't calone; he'd brought more than twenty gamma bodyguards. He hadn't hired betas—his family’s
decline left him short of funds-but even surrounded by so many guards, the open emptiness made him uneasy.
The sea was close; when the cold wind blew it carried a metallic tang that smelled eerily like blood.
“I'm here.”
The voice cfrom the phone-and then from behind him.
Hudson spun and found Aubrey standing there alone.
In the late light of the setting sun she was outlined in gold; her black leather ankle boots flashed coldly. For a
moment Hudson felt irrationally afraid, then scolded himself-she was only an omega! He was a capable beta
warrior.
So he straightened up, but still kept himself shielded inside the ring of his dozen or so guards.

Leon was weak already, bound and gagged, unable to fight, but when he saw Aubrey he strained mightily
against his restraints. Guilt filled his eyes—he hated that Aubrey risked herself for him.
Hudson tensed and did not move forward. Instead he asked cautiously, “How do you want to exchange him?”
Aubrey pointed to a car parked not far behind Hudson.
“My people are in that car. If you agree, release him. My people will cto collect him; he walks toward the car
and I'll walk toward
you. Fair?”
It sounded equitable—and in such an exposed place, with Aubrey only an omega, it seemed

Hudson considered for a moment, then nodded and released Leon.

But Leon refused to leave. The moment his ropes were cut he tore out the gag and tried to run to Aubrey, only to
be held back by Hudson's men.
“You should go the other way,” they ordered.
Leon didn’t comply. Aubrey smiled and soothed him, “Don’t worry. He owesa favor. He won't harm me.”
Leon knew staying might only complicate things, but his shat being so useless was overwhelming-he hated
that the woman he liked had to risk herself to save him.
“...I'm sorry | dragged you into this,” he whispered.
“Don’t be silly. I'm the one who dragged you into it,” Aubrey answered lightly. Her gaze landed on the
crosshatched scars on his torso and her smile grew cold.
“Go-your brother is waiting.”
Leon clenched his teeth but walked away toward the car.
Someone in the car cout with hands raised and walked toward Leon. Under Hudson's watchful eyes, Aubrey
began to step toward the man.
Step by step she closed the distance.
If Aubrey fell into his hands, Hudson imagined the hundred ways he could torture her-make Aurelia suffer, make
the Lynn family pay-and then drag her before Alpha Henry to force his surrender.
But suddenly Aubrey laughed. “Do you know something?”
Hudson froze.
“I will die alone. Even if the Moon Goddess protects him, he will certainly die.”
As soon as Aubrey finished speaking, the roar of engines thundered from the south.
