Chapter 36 Lines in the Sand

Aubrey’s POV

Finished

Whatever his problem was, it had nothing to do with me. | hadn't provoked him, hadn't even spoken to him

lately.

So | turned and walked away.

“Get in the car,” Alpha Henry said again.

| let out a dry laugh. Was this guy serious? I'd already cut ties with him. What did he think this was?

| kept walking. But how could | outrun a car?

“Get in. Don’t makesay it a third time.”

That finally gotto glance back.

“Alpha, do you not understand words? I've already broken off the engagement. We have nothing to do with each

other now. Why the hell would | get in your car?”

Henry's POV

Damn it. When did Aubrey turn into someone like this? She was all thorns now-sharp and untouchable. After | left

the station yesterday, | didn’t go home. | started digging into the incident from nine years ago- when | nearly

drowned.

Too much thad passed. Most of the evidence was long gone. | was furious... but powerless.

I'd planned to confront Mariana, but all | could see in my head was the moment Aubrey kissed me-and then bit

me. The look in her eyes was burned into me. That quiet pain, that total despair.

No. She'd lovedfor so long. There's no way she just let go.

| had to see her. That urge was so overwhelming, | went straight to her family’s hin the middle of the night.

Aurelia stammered when | asked about her, saying Aubrey hadn't chand often stayed out. She claimed

she didn’t know where she was.

She was obviously lying.

So | pulled footage from the street cameras. Sure enough, Aubrey had returned-but she never went inside.

Instead, she got into Charles's car.

Charles toldshe was staying here. | drove over immediately. On the way, my men mind-linked me, someone

had stolen the Moon Grass from our herb vault.

But honestly? The world could’ve been burning and | wouldn't have cared. | just needed to see Aubrey.

Then | got to the motel-and hesitated.

Why was | even here?

Chapter 36 Lines in the Sand

To apologize? | didn’t even know the full truth yet. What did | have to apologize for?

Then what was | doing?

| raked a hand through my hair in frustration. | sat in the car for over an hour, while even my wolf, Kylar, lost

patience.

“What are you waiting for, coward?” he growled.

Kalmost gave up. | even turned the key to drive away...

And then she stepped outside.

Her hair was wet, hanging loose. She wore nothing but a bathrobe-and someone else’s oversized jacket thrown

loosely on top.

At that moment, rage exploded in my chest.

| didn’t think. | slammed the car in gear and cut her off in the street.

| told her to get in. She refused, said we had nothing to do with each other anymore.

Her words cut deep. Since yesterday, she'd been acting like a completely different person. She'd never spoken

tothis way before.

Had she already replaced me?

My eyes drifted back to the jacket-the man’s jacket-wrapped around her shoulders.

| scoffed. “You think calling off the engagement means it’s over? Have the families agreed? Has the pack been

notified? No? Then you're still my fiancée. And | told you-get in the car.”

Aubrey’s POV

| smiled.coldly. | placed both hands on the edge of his window and leaned in, looking down at him.

My blue eyes gleamed like frozen stars. “I already returned the engagement token to the Miguel family. What

else do you want from me? Please, Alpha, kindly get out of my sight.”

The chill in my voice was sharp enough to cut.

His face twisted as he snapped back, “And who the hell do you think you are, orderingaround?”

| went quiet.

A flicker of something unreadable passed through my eyes-faint sadness, maybe. It lasted only a second, but it

hit him like a needle to the chest.

He'd chere to see me. Not to fight.

He shifted, clearly uncomfortable. His tone softened awkwardly. “Just get in. We still haven't finished our

conversation.”

“Oh? What's unclear?” My voice was still as cold as ever.

“Everything!” he snapped, glaring at me. His frustration was practically steaming off him.

| finally gave him a look of exasperation, walked around to the passenger side, and got in.

“Fine,” | said, shutting the door. | turned my face toward the window, casting my expression in shadows under

the streetlight.

“Speak, Alpha,” | said flatly. “It’s the middle of the night and you blocked my way-what the hell do you

want from me?”
