By the tI heard Aubrey had led the team out, it was already the next evening. Rain drizzled
steadily outside the window. A cold wind slipped through the open frame, making it rattle and
creak.
I looked outside, then down at my hand. The skin on the back of it was ghostly pale. A bitter laugh
escaped my lips.
“Xavier, I'm useless now, aren’t 1?”
He flinched. After a pause, he spoke cautiously. “Alpha... you'll recover. You're still the strongest
alpha werewolf we have. Even while sick, you’ve kept the Shadowmoon Pack running flawlessly. No
one leads like you.”
I let out a quiet scoff. “The strongest alpha? Then why can’t | even protect the woman | love? Why
does she have to take risks for me?”
Xavier lowered his head and stayed silent.
But all I could think about were the things Aubrey said before she left. She said | looked down on
her for being an omega. She said | didn’t really believe in her. But she was wrong.

| waved Xavier away. He didn’t move, | frowned and was about to snap at him when my phone
rang.

| stared at the screen. My lips pressed together. After a long moment, | answered.
“Awake?”
Her voice cthrough light and smug, like sneaking off behind my back was skind of accomplishment.

She didn’t wait forto speak. “Hey, Alpha Henry. | called to explain why I left so suddenly. Honestly, I'd been
thinking about it, but I didn’t plan to act so fast. | just launched a new project at the university. Do you know how
much this detour is costing me?”
“Then why the hell did you go!” My voice snapped. Xavier immediately left the room.
| couldn’t hold back anymore. “Get back here. Now.”
“Alpha, I'm calling you as a courtesy. You're seriously not going to listen?”
“I don’t want to hear it.”
“You'll regret that. Are you sure?”
“Unless you cback to the Shadowmoon Pack right now, | don’t want to hear a single word.”
“Well, where I'm headed, there’s no signal tower. | left in a hurry, didn’t bring a satellite phone. If you don’t listen
now, you probably won't get another chance.”
My heart tightened, but | barked back, “Perry’s with you. He wouldn’t leave without a satellite
phone.”
She sighed. “So you really don’t want to hear it. Okay. Bye.”
“Wait!” My blood boiled. She was really going to hang up without saying a single soft word? Did she
really think I couldn’t follow her to the FlPack? She was seriously underestimating me.
On the other end, she chuckled. “What, changed your mind?”
I stayed silent.
“No answer? I’m hanging up.”
“Aubrey-“1 growled her nthrough clenched teeth. She was my nemesis. The woman I loved to
the bone. The woman | hated to the bone.
But I didn’t want anything to happen to her because of me.
1 fought down the fury clawing at my chest.
“Aubrey, cback. I'd rather die than let you take this risk.”
If I'd been willing to let her walk into danger, 1 never would’ve given up the antibody to save her in
the first place.
