Chapter 89 Pop Quiz

For Charmaine, things were still as grim as ever.

She was stuck at the bottom of the social ladder, and it seemed likely she'd soon be cast aside by the five major

families...

The bell rang, signaling the start of class, and the professor for their major course walked in. “From now on, this

class will be conducted entirely in a foreign language. If any of you feel that your foundation in the language is

weak, you'll need to put in extra effort outside of class.”

As soon as the professor finished speaking, the entire class groaned in unison.

“| failed the foreign language exam last semester...

“Professor, this is too much! The vocabulary for our major is way more difficult than what we learned for the

sixth-level exam!”

“At this rate, our final exams are going to be a disaster.”

Hearing these complaints, the professor's face darkened.

“This course has required a foreign language since your freshman year. The school has given you two years to

prepare. If you're behind, you can leave and take language courses in other departments!

“If you don’t take this seriously, don’t even think about graduating under my watch!”

The professor’s sharp gaze swept the room. “Anyone struggling-speak now.”

A heavy silence fell. No one dared to speak, let alone breathe too loudly.

“Professor...” Leah hesitantly raised her hand. The professor's eyes narrowed as he looked at her, and Leah

spoke with uncertainty, “There's a student in our class who just returned after a two-year break, and their

foundation in the major might not be strong. Will that be a problem?”

Charmaine narrowed her eyes and shot Leah a smirk. “Do you really need to worry about me?”

Leah flinched, almost as if she was afraid of Charmaine. “Charmaine, I'm just concerned that you might fall

behind. If you struggle in class, it'll be hard for you. I'm thinking about the class as a whole, that’s all. | didn’t

“Yeah, Charmaine, Leah's right,” Veronica added, crossing her arms. “Even if you passed the test, that doesn’t

mean everything's fine with your major courses or your foreign language skills.”

The professor had already heard about Charmaine’s success on the first day of school. He adjusted his glasses

and addressed her directly in a foreign language, “What's your opinion on the current state of the economy in

our country?”

To everyone's shock, the professor had just given her a pop quiz. The class froze in surprise.

But secretly, they all breathed a sigh of relief-at least it wasn’t their turn.

With Charmaine setting the bar, even if the others flubbed their answers later, it wouldn't be as embarrassing as

not having attended class at all, like Charmaine had.

Charmaine stood up, thought for a brief moment, and then began speaking rapidly in flawless foreign language,

offering a detailed and confident response.

The other students could barely catch any of it, but the professor, whose stern expression had softened, was now

smiling approvingly.

“Very well, excellent answer. You may sit down.”

“Whoa, what did Charmaine just say?”

“Something about comparing the global economy to our domestic one?”

“Her foreign language skills are amazing! She sounds just like a native speaker on TV!”

Leah and Veronica, however, looked less than pleased.

“You all don’t remember, do you? Charmaine lived abroad for two years. It’s not that impressive for her to know

the language. If she didn’t, that would be embarrassing,” Veronica muttered, rolling her eyes.

At that moment, the professor called on Veronica, “You, canswer the question | just asked.”

Veronica froze, startled by the sudden attention.

Leah nudged her arm, silently urging her to stand. Veronica finally snapped out of it, sluggishly getting to her

feet.

The professor smiled encouragingly. “It’s alright. Just giveyour opinion.”

Veronica hesitated, her words coming out in fits and starts, her thoughts stumbling as she struggled to form

a coherent sentence.

She fumbled through her response, ignoring proper grammar and using every word that cto mind, her

forehead already covered in sweat. She managed to last about half a minute.

Compared to Charmaine’s polished performance, Veronica looked completely out of her depth.

As expected, the professor's face soured as he dismissed her, “Sstudents should spend less tworrying

about others and more on improving themselves. You spoke for so long and didn’t use a single advanced term!”

The message was clear.

Veronica's face turned bright red, and she sank into embarrassment, wishing she could disappear under the

desk.

Leah, on the other hand, kept her head low, terrified that the professor might call on her next.

Her foreign language skills were even worse than Veronica's!

Finally, the class ended. Leah and Veronica watched as the professor walked over to Charmaine, praising her

again. A group of academic elites gathered around Charmaine’s desk, and the jealousy on Leah and Veronica's

faces was unmistakable.
