Chapter 72 Charmaine Learns the Truth

+8 Pearls

Jane was sleeping and breathing softly but her brows were tightly furrowed as though she wasn’t sleeping

peacefully.

As Charmaine approached quietly, the corners of her eyes stung.

Before she realized it, she was already standing beside the bed.

She reached out, wanting to touch Jane’s head of white hair, but her hand stopped mid-air. It was hard to believe

that her grandmother had aged so much in just two years.

Was it the pain that had taken such a toll?

Charmaine pulled out a thin needle and carefully inserted it into several pressure points on Jane's body.

Moments later, the tension in Jane's furrowed brows eased slightly.

Seeing this, Charmaine felt her resolve strengthen. “Grandma, you'll soon have the best medicine. You won't

have to suffer anymore,” she murmured softly.

“Really, what's so special about this old woman that you'd go out of your way to chere...”

Sophie's voice from the hallway broke the silence.

Charmaine frowned and glanced around until her gaze landed on the semi-transparent window.

“Lower your voice. What do you know?” Bennett grumbled.

The door creaked open and Bennett's gaze swept around the room as he entered. He frowned when he noticed

that theroom was empty except for the softly swaying curtain.

“She's already deaf and sleeps like a vegetable every day. What's the point of being quiet?” Sophie retorted.

“Look, Charmaine even hired a caregiver for this dying old hag. Who knows where she’s gone off to.”

Bennett locked the door and carefully inspected the room. He even peeked out the window before closing it

tightly.

Once sure no one else was around, he walked over to Jane's bedside and pulled the oxygen tube away from

her nose.

Within seconds, Jane's complexion began to turn ashen from the lack of oxygen.

Sophie gasped in shock, nearly biting her tongue as she stammered.

“W-What are you doing? She won't die, will she?”

Bennett scoffed, “Not in under a minute.”

He kept a close eye on the time. When Jane's peaceful expression morphed into pain and her mouth opened in a

desperate attempt to breathe, he pulled out his phone and snapped several high-resolution photos.

Only then did he reattach the oxygen tube.

“She didn’t respond to my message yesterday. If we don’t give her a little push, how will we make her listen?

Bennett sent the photos to Charmaine.

As he did, a faint sound caught his attention, but before he could focus on it, Sophie’s voice interrupted.

“Will that work? Charmaine already knows we're not her biological parents. Would she still care about that old

hag?”

Bennett sneered disdainfully. “That's exactly why | said women are soft-hearted. No matter how defiant she acts

now, it’s all a front.”

His confidence was unwavering. Using Jane to control Charmaine was a plan he was sure would succeed.

“If she didn’t care about Jane, she wouldn't have spent so much money putting her in such a high-end

sanatorium in the first place,” he added smugly.

Understanding lit up Sophie's face, and a sly smile curled her lips. “Honey, you really are brilliant.”

“Of course. Do you think you could cup with something like this?” Bennett sneered coldly.

“Back then, before Leah was born, your father predicted she'd be cursed with misfortune and bring disaster to

the family. If | hadn't cup with the idea of stealing someone else’s good fortune to change her fate, we'd still

be stuck in the countryside raising pigs and shoveling manure. That old hag wouldn't even dream of staying in a

place like this at all!”

Sophie gasped and hurried to cover his mouth. “Are you insane? What if someone hears us?”

Bennett shoved her hand away and said dismissively, “Didn't you just say my mom's deaf? What are you so

scared of? Besides, who would believe there's such a thing as stealing someone's fortune to change fate?”

Sure, no one would believe it-but they had done it and succeeded.

Sophie patted her chest, calming herself from the years-old memory. A flicker of resentment surfaced in her

eyes.

“Charmaine, that wr*tch, is way too lucky. From the moment she was born, we've been siphoning off her fortune

for Leah. Poor Leah had to grow up using her hand-me-down and still couldn’t drain it all. We thought we'd be rid

of her when she turned 18 and sent her to South Aspus to die. Who'd have thought she'd survive? And now,

she’s trying to claw her way back to step on Leah again. Honestly, the heavens are too unfair!”

Bennett, however, was entirely composed. “How is this a bad thing? Because of her good fortune, Leah gets to

enjoywealth and luxury. Our family left the countryside and built a life in Eragos because of her fortune. It's a

good thing she didn’t die. Once Leah gets her kidney and takes the rest of her fortune, our best days will still be

ahead.”
