Chapter 65 Bennett's Threats

“What do you think we should do then?” Charmaine was genuinely curious to hear just how delusional he

could be.

Bennett didn’t hesitate. “Unless you grovel and apologize in front of Leah and sign the consent form for the

kidney donation surgery, then maybe I'll consider it.”

He was itching to hear Charmaine beg and grovel for forgiveness.

Just like back in the Reads household-when he and Sophie spared her even a glance, Charmaine would behave

like an obedient dog, ready to follow any command.

But this time, all he heard was Charmaine’s amused laughter, as if she'd just heard the most ridiculous joke.

“Why should I listen to you? | didn’t even think the Nelsons were worth my time. Who do you think you

are?”

“You're not-"

“If that's all you have to say, then there's nothing more to discuss.”

Realizing she was about to hang up, Bennett, now livid, suddenly remembered the main reason for his call.

He hurriedly spoke, “Charmaine, do you not care about your Grandma now?”

Charmaine paused and took a deep breath.

Bennett was talking about his mother, Jane York.

Jane lived in the countryside and only cto the city during the summer and winter breaks to help watch the

younger children. During those rare visits, Charmaine could feel a glimmer of familial warmth.

However, Jane’s health had always been poor. Her legs gave out when Charmaine was still in elementary school,

and she was sent to a nursing hwhere she spent her days bedridden.

In her past life, Charmaine hadn't been able to visit Jane after returning to the Nelsons. The kidney transplant

surgery had kept her bedridden, and Jane had already passed away before she recovered.

“What are you trying to say?” Charmaine’s voice was calm although she was gripping her phone tightly.

Bennett continued smugly, “You know her health is bad. After being bedridden for so many years, her condition

has deteriorated further. The doctor said she doesn’t have much tleft.

“But, there's a special imported medicine available overseas. It can ease her pain and prolong her life for a

while.”

Charmaine remained silent.

On the other end, Bennett could hear her soft breathing. Knowing she hadn't hung up yet, he leaned back,

savoring his moment of control.

“Unfortunately, the medicine is ridiculously expensive. It needs to be administered once a month, and each dose

costs 800,000 dollars. If you do the math, it's easily five or six million over several years.”

“So what if she’s my mother? That medicine isn’t something ordinary families can afford. But you, Charmaine,

you're different. You know Mr. Jonah is offering 100 million dollars to find Leah a kidney, right? All you have to do

is give Leah your kidney. That way, she can live a few more years, and you'll even have 50 million left over. You

got such a great deal thanks to Leah.”

Even though Charmaine had braced herself for Bennett's shamelessness, she hadn't expected him to stoop

this low.

“Bennett, you're disgusting!”

Ordinary families?

The Reads might not be as wealthy as the Nelsons, but they were still extraordinarily well-off. For Leah's

birthday, Bennett and Sophie had gifted her a luxury apartment in the city center worth at least tens of millions.

It wasn’t that Bennett couldn't afford the medication-he simply refused to spend it.

Hearing Charmaine’s insult only seemed to excite Bennett further.

Who would've thought that the dying old woman could still be useful in holding Charmaine hostage?

“I haven't even asked you to repay the Nelsons for the ten years you lived under our roof. I'm being generous

here. Letspell it out. Either you sign the consent form for the kidney surgery, or you pay 50 million upfront.

Pick one and your Grandma can keep living a little longer.”

Bennett then laughed hysterically and continued, “Whether she lives or dies depends entirely on your

conscience, Charmaine.”

With that, he hung up.

Charmaine hurled her phone onto the bed and pressed her hands to her face.

Moments later, her hands balled into fists, and her gaze turned icy.

The next morning.

In the villa’s dining room, Emyr sat at the table with his tablet in front of him, scrolling through the day’s

international news.

He sipped his black coffee while glancing at the woman who was seated nearby. Her hands were clasped in front

of her, and she sat perfectly still, though her eyes were bloodshot.

When breakfast ended, Charmaine said a quick goodbye before heading to school.

Emyr casually wiped his hands after taking the damp towel handed to him by Alfred. “What's wrong with her?”

he asked.

Alfred, who had been bottling up his frustration all night, finally had a chance to vent. “Mr. Emyr, Ms. Nelson was

bullied at school yesterday.”

Emyr raised an eyebrow with a hint of disbelief. “Someone bullied Charmaine?”
