Chapter 147 Abyss of Despair
Their faces were filled with flattery she had never seen before. If Charmaine wasn’t composed enough, she might
have thought she was dreaming.
still, she remained cautious.
“I'm not staying. Just givethe card, and I'll be on my way.”
The only reason she showed up tonight was because of a text from Bennett.
He said the company was facing sdifficulties, and his credit was in trouble. The only spare cash he had was
a million dollars, just barely enough to cover Jane's treatment for a year. He wanted Charmaine to hold onto it for
safekeeping.
If it weren't for Jane, Charmaine wouldn't have cat all.
She didn’t need that million dollars, but it rightfully belonged to Jane, and she was determined to take it
back for her.
“How can you just ask for money right away? That's so rude, Sophie pouted, covering her mouth.
Charmaine tilted her head and shot back with a mocking smile. “Didn't you teachmanners? If there's a
problem, it’s with you.”
Sophie wanted to argue, but Bennett quickly cut her off.

“We finally got to see Charmaine. Do you want to drive her away?”
“Turning to Charmaine, he forced a smile. “Charmaine, don’t take Sophie’s words to heart. She’s just blunt
and doesn’t mean any harm.”
“Sit down. A lot has happened lately, and I've cto see the highs and lows of life. Honestly, | understand.
things now that | never did before-especially the guilt | feel toward you.”
Bennett walked up to her, letting out a long sigh filled with helplessness and regret.
“As parents, we failed to support and love you as we should have. Now that we've experienced what it’s like to
be abandoned by those around us, we can finally understand a bit of what you must have felt back then.”
Watching him try to play the sympathy card, Charmaine remained indifferent.
“Mr. Read, your acting is impressive.”
It was rare for Charmaine to offer such a comment. She extended her hand. “Givethe card.”
Bennett, who thought he had touched her heart, was nearly infuriated by her cold reaction.
His face flushed red, but in the end, he pulled out a bank card from his pocket.
Just as Charmaine took it, Bennett held on tight.
“Charmaine, we’ve ordered all your favorite dishes tonight. Stay and have a meal before you leave. We sincerely
want to apologize.”

Charmaine glanced at the table and smirked.
“Are you sure these are my favorite dishes?”
Her soft yet piercing voice made them freeze.
“Aren’t they? The maids said you always ate these...
“Chicken feet, fish tails, shrimp heads... Ha, impressive choices.”

Charmaine’s voice grew sharper, her eyes cold with scorn. “The only reason | used to eat these was because
they were all you ever left me. What else was | supposed to eat?”
Bennett and Sophie looked embarrassed. Bennett hurriedly called the waiter. “We'll order something else.
Charmaine, you can pick whatever you want. Tonight, eat to your heart's content.”
Taking advantage of his distraction, Charmaine subtly hooked the card with her finger and slipped it out of his
grip.
“No need

She turned to leave, but just then, the door swung open, and in walked a man with a large belly and a few
strands of sparse white hair.
“Mr. Read!”
“Mr. Moritz! What a coincidence running into you here!”
Bennett nearly lost his composure but quickly started signaling to Gordon.
Gordon, however, had eyes only for Charmaine. His lecherous gaze locked onto her, practically drooling.
“So this is Charmaine? It's been years, and she’s grown even more beautiful.”
He reached out with his short, stubby hand. “Do you remember me? A few years ago, your dad brought you to
my estate’s opening ceremony. | liked you even back then.”
The moment Gordon appeared, an icy chill settled in Charmaine’s eyes.
Of course, she remembered.
That year, Bennett had dressed her up like never before-buying her a princess gown and even hiring a stylist to
do her makeup. For once, he wanted to take her to a business event.
Charmaine had been overwhelmed with happiness, thinking that after working so hard, she had finally earned
his approval.
But unfortunately, all those extravagant efforts were just to push her into an abyss of despair.
