Chapter 658 Chapter 0658 Nina "Nina and Enzo?" Enzo and I both looked up, both relieved and nervous to see the nurse standing in the doorway. I took a deep breath and stood, nervously holding my barely-showing belly. However, despite my reservations, the nurse looked like a kind young woman and flasheda warm smile as we approached.
"Good morning," she said, jotting something down on her clipboard as we walked up to her. "Ready for your appointment?" I nodded, glancing up at Enzo. "Ready as ever," I said softly.
The two of us followed the nurse into the exam room, Enzo's hand clasped tightly in mine. The room was a stark white color but surprisingly warm, with a comforting scent of antiseptic mingled with a faint floral air freshener. Sunlight filtered through the blinds, casting striped shadows across the floor. Lastly, there was an ultrasound machine pushed up against the wall, and just seeing it made my heart race.
Today, we would finally be seeing the very first images of our baby. I just hoped that everything would be alright. "Hop up here and let's get started." The nurse patted the exam table, and began asking a series of questions while taking my vitals.
"So, Nina, how have you been feeling? Any bad morning sickness?" she asked, wrapping the blood pressure cuff around my arm.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtI glanced over at Enzo and shrugged. Obviously there was so much that I couldn't tell her, but morning sickness was at least one thing that I could talk about. "It was a rough start, but I feel much better now," I replied, trying to sound as normal as possible. "I still have moments, but..." "That's good to hear. You're a few months along now, so the morning sickness should start to subside. But don't be alarmed if it returns," the nurse said, scribbling something on her clipboard. "Morning sickness can sometimes last through the entire pregnancy." "Yay," I replied sarcastically.
The nurse chuckled. "I know, I know," she said. "The joys of motherhood. Be prepared for other symptoms like swollen feet and a sore back, too." She handeda few pamphlets, tapping the topmost one. "I'd highly recommend trying out sprenatal yoga classes," she said. "It's important to stay flexible throughout the pregnancy, and a lot of expecting mothers also wind up enjoying finding a community with other women in the sboat as them." I took the pamphlets, my brow furrowing as I looked at the picture of a heavily pregnant woman doing a headstand. It seemed unrealistic, and almost madelaugh. I couldn't help but wonder if it was photoshopped.
"Thanks," I said. "I'll check it out." Next, the nurse checked my heart with her stethoscope, listening intently for a few moments. But as she listened to my heart, her brow furrowed slightly. I felt a spike of anxiety.
"Is something wrong?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.
"It's nothing, just your heart is beating quite fast," she said. "But your blood pressure wasn't high." I knew it was because of my werewolf nature; our hearts beat faster than humans. But I couldn't reveal that here." I just get a little nervous during appointments," I lied smoothly.
The nurse nodded, jotting down a note. "I'll let the doctor know," she said, leaving us alone in the room.
As we waited, I turned to Enzo, my expression troubled. "Do you think my werewolf nature will keep worrying the doctor? There are so many things aboutthat might seem unhealthy to a human but are normal for us." Enzo squeezed my hand reassuringly. "It should be fine," he said calmly. "I can show you sbreathing techniques to slow your heart rate and appear more human." I nodded, letting out a breath that I didn't know I had been holding. A few minutes later, there was a soft knock on the door. An older woman stepped in a moment later, wearing a white lab coat.
"You must be Nina and Enzo," she said, rubbing her hands with disinfectant as she entered. "I'm Doctor Jamison. Are you ready to see your little baby?" My heart leaped with both excitement and nervousness, and I nodded vehemently. The doctor instructedto lay back on the table, and as the cold gel spread over my belly and the doctor began moving the transducer, Enzo's hand tightened around mine.
"Let's see... Aha! There's your little one," the doctor said, turning the screen so we could see.
There on the screen was our baby, barely more than a blob, but unmistakably ours. The sound of its little heartbeat filled the room, rapid and strong. Tears of joy streamed down my face; our baby was healthy, his or her heart beating despite everything.
"Wow," I breathed, my hand tightening around Enzo's as the tears blurred my vision, obstructing my view of our baby. "We made that, Enzo." Enzo let out a soft laugh, and stroked my hair. "We sure did." "I must say, you and the baby are both in phenomenal health despite the high heart rate," the doctor commented, wiping the gel off my stomach a few moments later.
I blushed, feeling a mix of pride and relief. "I'm very active," I managed to say.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏm"That's good. Stay active throughout the pregnancy," the doctor advised, echoing the nurse's earlier suggestion about prenatal yoga. "Being active and limber is vital for an easy delivery." I nodded. "I will." "Oh, and your baby.." The doctor shook her head, clearly perturbed.
I furrowed my brow. "What is it?" "Well," the doctor said, "it's just that it's developed a little more than normal at this stage. Nothing to be concerned about, but... rather curious, that's all."
As the doctor spoke, I shot another glance at Enzo. Yet another quirk of a werewolf pregnancy, I supposed. But the doctor, thankfully, said nothing more about it. And that day, as we made our way home, I couldn't wipe the beaming grin off of my face.
In the following days, with the yellow-eyed wolf sightings continuing, I finally decided to go out with Luke to patrol the area. If that ve wolf really was a spy of my father's, then I wanted to catch it and send it right back to him; a message to my father that, despite what he thought about me, I wasn't a damsel in distress-and I certainly wasn't comfortable with being spied on.
As we drove, we chatted about the baby and my excitement. I told kuke all about the heartbeat, the rapid ut development, and the fact that I felt better than ever. Luke smiled, his eyes on the road as I drove. "I'm so happy for you, Nina. You're going to be an amazing mom, you know that?" I blushed. "You think so?" Luke nodded. "Of course. You- But then, our conversation was cut short. Up ahead, something darted across the road. Something large, and doglike, and...
With distinctly yellow eyes.
"There!" Luke cried out, pointing. "It's that bloody wolf!" I wasted no time. My foot pressed down on the gas pedal and the engine revved, launching us forward.
I was going to catch this wolf and send it right back to my father, no matter what.
