BURST PIPE JESS

The sound of heavy boots on the porch broughtto the front door before the second knock landed. | swung it

open to find Josh standing there, a sheepish grin on his face, and Laura and Sarah behind him, each carrying

duffel bags.

"Hey, Jess," Josh started, scratching the back of his neck. "Thanks again for letting us crash here for a bit. It's a

nightmare over at the house."

Laura let out a tic sigh. "A nightmare is an

understatement. Water is everywhere, the floorboards are fucking ruined, and now they have to turn off the

power and water while they tear up the plumbing. Honestly, I'm just glad

we have somewhere to go."

| smiled despite the ache in my feet. "You're always welchere. You know that."

Stepping aside, | motioned for them to cin. Josh walked through first, dropping his bag by the stairs. Laura

followed, immediately heading toward the kitchen like it was second nature. Sarah lingered a moment longer,

her lips curving into a polite smile as she passed me.

"I hope it's not too much trouble," she said softly.

"It's fine," | replied, meaning it-mostly.

The truth was, | didn't mind having them here. Our house was

big enough to accommodate them, and it wasn't like Luke and | hadn't dealt with chaos before. The bigger issue

was managing it while feeling like I'd been hit by a truck after every little task.

"Con," | said, leading them toward the stairs. "I'll show you your rooms."

Josh and Laura followedup while Sarah stayed back in the foyer, glancing around like she was sizing the

| led Josh and Laura to the two guest rooms upstairs. "Josh, you'll take this one with Laura," | said, pointing to the

room on the left. "There's a bathroom across the hall."

"Perfect," Laura-said, tossing her bag onto the bed and immediately flopping down beside it. "I had something

going on the stove. Mind if I just finish it here?" Laura said to nobody in particular as she sauntered back down.

Josh chuckled, ruffling her hair before heading into his room without a word.

Back downstairs, | found Sarah waiting by the staircase, her expression unreadable.

"Your room's down here," | said, motioning for her to followtoward the smaller guest room at the back of the

house. "It's a little cozier than the ones upstairs, but it's got an attached bathroom, so you'll have more privacy."

Sarah glanced around as we stepped into the room, her gaze lingering on the neatly made bed and the soft light

filtering through the curtains.

"Privacy's overrated," she said with a shrug, her lips curling into

a faint smile. "But this is nice. Thanks, Jess."

"Letknow if you need anything," | offered, ignoring the slight unease her comment stirred in me.

She set her bag down by the dresser, and | left her to get settled, retreating to the kitchen where the smell of

garlic and herbs greeted me.

Laura was at the stove, stirring something that looked far too fancy for a last-minute dinner. A pot of pasta was

boiling beside her, and a pile of chopped vegetables sat on the counter.

"Bless you," | said, sinking onto one of the barstools. "I don't think | have the energy to look at food, let alone

cook it."

Laura shota knowing smile. "You're welcome. | figured the boys would devour anything in sight, so | might as

well make something decent. Besides, you've been on your feet all day, haven't you?" | glanced down at my

swollen feet, hidden under the table. "Maybe."

"Jess." Laura's tone was playful but firm. "Sit. Rest. I've got this."

| didn't argue. The dull throb in my feet was enough to convincethat sitting still for a while wasn't the worst

idea.

Just as | let out a sigh of relief, Luke walked in, his hair damp from the shower, and immediately zeroed in on me.

"You okay?" he asked, crossing the room to press a kiss to my forehead.

"Careful," | teased, and he grinned.

"Figured we might need these," he said, setting them on the counter. "At least | do." Josh groaned.

"Dinner and a show," Laura muttered, rolling her eyes. "You boys better not ruin my masterpiece."

Luke shot her a wink before turning his attention back to me. "Need anything, babe?"

"No," | said softly, smiling at him. "I've got everything | need right here."
