Chapter 413 Miranda honestly didn't care much. She hadn't joined this department for the money.

Curiosity had brought her here.

She wanted to meet other people with the sstrange abilities she'd recently discovered in herself. Still, a $20,000 payout for this assignment was a hell of a lot—especially for a government gig.

It's not every day you see that kind of budget in a federal department.

No wonder Beck bragged that their unit got the biggest slice of the pie.

He probably figured if the pay was lower than what the private sector offered, half these people would jump ship in a heartbeat.

Most of the others didn't quite get why Beck made that point, though.

For them, twenty grand was more than generous.

"You nine can work together, or solo," Beck continued, his tone businesslike. "Doesn't matter to me, as long as you get the job done and report back with results. If you fail, sas always: no pay, and your points take a hit." Miranda raised an eyebrow. "Points?" Amelia leaned in to explain. "We each have a points score-you'll see it when you open the app. The higher your points, the better your track record. Everyone's trying to climb the leaderboard... especially those guys over there." She nodded toward a group of men at the back.

Miranda frowned. "So... what's the prize?" Amelia grinned. "Nothing, really. Just bragging rights. Well, at the end of the year, the lowest scorer has to clean the whole office, top to bottom. That's the deal." Miranda smirked. "Seriously?" Apparently, Beck knew how to handle this bunch.

Miranda could tell: losing points seemed to sting these people more than losing money.

Beck glanced around, gauging their reactions. "Any questions?" Nobody spoke; they just exchanged looks.

"Alright, then. That's it for the briefing. Good luck out there." Beck's words echoed for a split second and then he was gone. Vanished, voice and all.

At that moment, everyone's phones buzzed.

Miranda glanced down.

She'd just been added to a Whatgroup called "RapidForce Task Force." A pinned message outlined the mission details.

She blinked. For such a high-level department, this felt oddly... down-to-earth.

But a second look told her this wasn't just any Whatchat. It was an in-house, custom-modified thing, with features regular chats didn't have.

"So, what's the plan?" Noah asked, pushing his thick black glasses up his nose. He looked about twenty-five, dressed in a faded Marvel tee and sweatpants, a bit chubby-classic techie vibes.

Jacob, always grinning, looked over at Miranda. "I'm curious, gorgeous-what's your move?" White Ghost, who towered over everyone (the guy had to be at least 6'7"), scowled. "Work together? Nope. I'll handle my own business." He looked as tough as his codensuggested, and just as distant.

Amelia didn't hesitate; she hooked her arm through Miranda's. "I'm with pretty lady here. The rest of you do what you want." The group rolled their eyes at Amelia's antics, but she was young, so they let it slide.

"Let's at least coordinate," Thomas said quietly. He looked a coupleyears older than Miranda but had this Calm, collected air-and movie-star cheekbones. Miranda glanced at Amelia, who was practically glued to her side, then shrugged and strode toward the door.

"Hey! Where are you going?" White Ghost called out.

Miranda waved, not looking back. "Home." The others stared after her, clearly annoyed.

"Look at her. Thinks she can do whatever she wants just 'cause she's pretty," James grumbled.

Jacob just smiled. "Hey, being pretty gets you places, man." It was obvious Jacob found Miranda intriguing.

What most of them didn't say out loud: sof the e younger, moren intesavvy guys had already En recognized her. She wasn't just srich girl-she was a celebrity, after all.

Amelia shot Jacob a warning look. "Don't you even think about playing Mira." Jacob was notorious for being a player, so the warning was well-earned.

Most of the group, though, seemed put off by Miranda's attitude.

Silent Cat folded her arms. "Hmph. I'll believe her skills when see them on mission day. "

Thomas's voice was cool. "As long as she doesn't screw things up for the screw rest of us, don't care." Nobody disagreed.

They'd all seen Miranda's abilities, but a mission was a mission.

And the last thing any of them wanted was dead weight.
