Chapter 399 Sacrifice

"I'm okay, and | just wanted to chat with you. Dr. Gene just cby this morning, and we owe it all to Benjamin.

Without him, we might not have had the chance to meet an expert like Dr. Gene," Eleanor said earnestly. Harper

understood naturally.

She nodded to show she understood.

Eleanor continued, "Harper, have you been in touch with your family lately?"

Eleanor naturally meant the Mitchell family, but it took Harper a couple of seconds to realize.

She looked at Eleanor and asked, "What are you trying to say?"

Eleanor just smiled kindly, her heart exceptionally benevolent and her thoughts especially thorough. She said

softly, "I'm preparing for surgery, and I'd like to see your mother before I go in. It's not convenient forto visit

the Mitchell Manor now. Could you ask if she might cto the hospital?"

Harper looked at Eleanor with a cold expression, filled with endless questions, but she asked emotionlessly, "Why

do you want to see her?"

Eleanor has been in the hospital for so many days that the Mitchell family could know this.

Although the Mitchells weren't what they used to be, rumors about certain things still reached their ears.

Yet, until now, Jennifer hasn't gone to visit Eleanor. Harper couldn't deny feeling resentful, but she thought she

had no right to demand attention from others, which was why she felt compelled to be extra kind to Eleanor.

Eleanor never mentioned why she wanted to see Jennifer.

But she insisted that Harper should try to find Jennifer and ask her to come.

Unable to refuse Eleanor's request, Harper ultimately nodded in agreement.

Leaving Eleanor's hospital room, Harper hesitated whether to call Jennifer but decided against it, recalling their

last unpleasant meeting. She finally dismissed the idea.

She would have to go to the Mitchell Manor in person.

For Eleanor, she was willing.

After accompanying Annie from the hospital and taking her back to her apartment, Harper had her driver take

her to the Mitchell Manor.

Arriving at the Mitchell Manor, she sat in the car, not immediately opening the door. She sat in silence for a long

tbefore finally making a move.

Harper knocked on the door, which Jennifer opened.

Their eyes met, and the mother and daughter regarded each other with indifferent expressions.

Jennifer asked, "What brings you here?"

She said here, not back.

One word made all the difference.

Harper was used to it by now, but it still sounded grating and uncomfortable each time.

Her expression was utterly impassive, her eyes slightly vacant as she said, "I have something | need to discuss

with you."

Jennifer glanced at her, then stepped aside to let her in.

They sat in the living room. It was technically her family home, yet Harper felt no sense of belonging.

"Her stays at the Mitchell Manor had

been few and far between. After being brought back from Dattlech she quickly married Benjamin, and they

moved into Pineview Villa

making her practically a stranger in the Mitchell Manor."

Jennifer asked, "So, what did you want to talk about?" "Grandma is in the hospital," Harper stated directly.

Jennifer's expression was faintly dismissive. "And?"

Harper's face tightened as she watched Jennifer, her voice cold. "She is seriously ill and needs major surgery.

Don't you have anything to say?"

"She has doctors at the hospital. What can | possibly say?" Jennifer retorted.

Harper furrowed her brow, hardly able to believe it.

But Jennifer didn't think she had said anything wrong and added, "Did you chere just to tellshe's in the

hospital, hoping I'd feebguilty or reflect on something?"

Harper suppressed her emotions and said quietly, "She wants to see you before her surgery."

Jennifer's face was stern. "I told you, I'm not a doctor. | can't help by being there."

Jennifer was reluctant to go out. Stepping outside meant

encountering people she knew, which she wanted to avoid. After the incidents involving the Mitchell

family, she had changed a lot, Apart from shopping for daily meals, she preferred to stay indoors,

So, she didn't want to visit Eleanor in the hospital.

Her refusal made Harper's expression turn even grimmer. Harper asked, "I'm just asking you to make one visit,

not to take any responsibility. Can't you even do that?"
