I shook my head. “It’s not approval, just understanding. I'm sure every mother would worry about that.”
Edward said in a serious tone. “Even if she cares about her daughter, that doesn’t give her the right to talk to
you like that. It's just disrespectful.”
“Edward, | actually think the prenup she mentioned is a good idea. I'm bringing it up because | don’t want things
to get messy later,” | said, taking the initiative to avoid any future .
“If you think it's necessary, we can talk it through,” Edward said, his tone softening.
Just then, the door to the hospital room opened behind us. Nora, looking pale and clutching a bunny plushie,
stood quietly in the doorway.

Nora ran straight into Edward’s arms and wrapped her arms around him. “Dad, | thought you weren't going to
come.
“As soon as | heard you were sick, | cright away,” Edward said gently, his voice full of concern. “Is your
stomach still hurting? Are you feeling any discomfort?”
Nora shook her head. “No, I'm not feeling sick anymore. | just wanted to see you.”
Edward gently stroked her hair. “I'm going to stay and take care of you.”
Nora let go of Edward and turned to look at me. “You're Sophie’s mom. Why are you here with my dad?”
Edward's face changed slightly, and he spoke in a low voice, “Nora, Victoria and | are dating.”
“So, is she going to be my new mom?” Nora asked, a hint of disappointment on her face.
It was the first t| ever felt my heart pounding and nerves on edge just from talking to a kid.
“Hi, Nora, | greeted her softly.
Nora's face shifted, and in the next moment, she buried her head in Edward's chest, refusing to look at me.
Edward shota comforting glance, then bent down to his daughter. “Nora, Victoria has a really kind heart.
Would you give her a chance and try to get along with her?”
After a few seconds of silence, Nora suddenly blurted out, “Dad, wasn’t she dating Ryan before? How cshe’s
with you now? Do grown-ups always have such messy relationships?”
Both Edward and | were taken aback.

you now? Do Grandpa and Grandma know about this? Will they really be okay with it?” She was way more
perceptive than most kids her age.
Edward nodded reassuringly. “Your grandparents know. We already went to Braylin and talked to them.”
“Was Ryan getting beaten up because of her?” Nora pointed right at me, her voice steady. “I'm not a little kid
anymore. | have my own spies in the house, you know. | know everything that happened-Ryan got beaten up
really badly that day, and so did you, Dad.”
| felt my breath hitch, a wave of shand absurdity washing over me. ‘Is what Edward and | have really so
impossible in everyone else’s eyes?’ | wondered.
Edward looked at me, worry and tenderness written all over his face, clearly afraid I'd be hurt by what Nora said.
“Nora, relationships between adults aren't as simple as you think,” Edward said, his voice dropping low and
serious. “Victoria and | are together because we truly care about each other.”
