| looked at Edward, and he was quietly gazing back at me. Then, he smiled. “There might be spressure, but

we'll do our best in our roles. Tkeeps moving, and the kids will grow up.”

| smiled, lips pressed together. “Yeah, treally does fly by.”

After | stopped being a housewife and started working, treally did seem to speed up.

It was already June 2015, and the weather was heating up. The vibrant summer was just around the corner.

“Victoria, am | imagining things, or do your eyes seem like they've got a story to tell?” Edward suddenly asked.

“What have you been through?”

| felt a jolt in my heart and quickly masked the sadness in my eyes with a smile. “Really? Maybe it’s just my

slight nearsightedness. Everything seems more sentimental to me.”

Edward shook his head. “No, you're too calm for your age.”

“Is that so?” | lowered my gaze and smiled. “You like me, so you probably seethrough rose-colored glasses.

People always see the best in what they love.”

“Actually, the first t| saw you, | noticed a kind of independence in you that can’t be claimed by anyone, as if

you were always a little apart from everyone else.” As Edward spoke, he reached out and drewinto his

embrace.

I lay quietly with my head in his lap, feeling something stir deep inside me.

It was an unfamiliar yet wonderful feeling, having someone try to truly understand me.

It was like being a closed book, and someone finally chose to open it and read the very first page.

“Edward, is this just the thrill of something new for you?” | asked softly.

Edward ran his fingers through my hair, sending a slight shiver down my spine.

“What thrill? Where do you get all these ideas? You really need to stop reading so much stuff online,” Edward

chuckled helplessly.

“Alright, I've got nothing to lose now, so I'm not worried you'll fall out of love with me,” | said, looking up at him.

Edward pinched my cheek with a hint of exasperation. “Stop overthinking things that haven't even happened

yet. So, what did Mariah say when she invited you for tea?”

“She toldthat if | want to be Mrs. Sterling, | need to have a strong mind,” | replied honestly.

Edward paused, then laughed. “She’s not wrong. | might actually need you to helphandle sthings at the

company.”

“Handle what exactly?” | blurted out in surprise.

Edward looked down at me. “I want you to oversee the charity foundation. | know you'll handle it really well

“Me?” | was stunned. “I'm afraid | can't do it.”

Edward seemed to know I'd hesitate. He said in a low voice, “You'll be fine. I'll have someone show you the

ropes. | want the charity fund’s management in the hands of someone | trust-and honestly, no one’s better for

that than my wife.”

“Edward, I...” He really was offeringsomething big here.

“Alright, don’t get all emotional just because I'm offering you something good. Dream bigger. You can be even

more amazing,” Edward said, leaning down to kiss my forehead. “It’s settled.”

My thoughts were all over the place. In my previous life, | was totally lost-no ambition, just obsessed with

chasing a man’s love, and in the end, | lost so badly it wasn’t even funny.

This taround, | threw myself into my career, and somehow, love just kept blooming on its own. And now, I've

even met a guy who actually helpsreach the top.

Is this what they call a happy accident? | never meant for things to turn out this good, but here | am.

That night, Edward didn’t go back to the Jennings family. He spent the night at my place.

While | was showering, | remembered that last t| cranked the cold water all the way up, drenching myself

like a drowned rat, but even then, whatever was in my system kept messing with my mind, making it impossible

to think straight.

Edward was the one who rushed in and gotto the hospital.

| remember acting like a total mess, practically draping myself all over him and making things difficult for him

the whole way.

But Edward never took advantage of me-not even a little. For someone who usually acts like a bit of a rogue, he

was all gentleman when it really mattered.
